Navaja is out

There is so much I dislike about this knife, the huge choil and ricasso, the tapped bolsters and the ratcheting noise. Yet, I am really close to pressing the order button right now just because it intrigues me so much.

I disagree with the suggestion that some material be removed from the bolster to make unlocking easier as it would make accidental unlocking when gripping very tightly more likely.

I agree. The lockup looks and feels very solid, but it really doesn't require a great deal of effort to move it out of lock. The "problem" is that if you try to use the normal thumb action on the lock you tend to place more horizontal force than vertical and it seems hard to diengage. Once you realize you can easily move it out of lock with just your thumbnail things become easier.
Because the resistence really isn't that great, removing material would increase the chances of an accindent, as you noted.

The mild clicking is something that I can live with and maybe even enjoy.

I think way to much is made of the "ratchet" sound. It's barely noticeable. The blade locking into postion makes far more noise.
It's just a little different, and kinda cool.

Oh, go ahead, I think you will probably like it.! :D

I really don't like the tapped bolster either, kinda hurts the looks on a knife this nice. But what are you going to do? So many folks like tip-down carry its hard not to do it.
Hmmm...I guess moving the clip there could protect at least one bolster from scratches a bit. I generally prefer tip down anyway.
I'd really like to see the bolsters jeweled...I think it might look nice.

Such an enabler :D I can't knock it until I hold and see it for myself. I'll probably order one soon. Does anyone have comparison pics next to a Gayle Bradley or Endura (my current EDC Spydies).

Got mine in last week. I'm not a knife expert or anything, but I like pretty much everything about this knife. The F&F seem top-notch to me. The blade shape, reach, and choke-up ability give it some interesting versatility. I think that this knife walks the line between EDC and something more akin to a "Gentlemen's Carry" well, which is funny considering the history of the knife I guess. :)
IMO, the screw holes in the bolsters are a sign of this compromise (or marrying, depending on how you view it) between the aesthetics and functionality of the knife.

I guess I'm in the minority though; I actually wanted the ratchet sound to be louder!

Edit: I also love the blade thickness of this knife. The point almost looks like something you'd most commonly find on a tanto. It looks like this thing is built with quite a lot of piercing power with little worry about breaking the tip off.

For the post requesting pics of Endura vs Navaja, I'll try to take some tonight or tomorrow for you.

Here are some pics, sorry that I can't account for sun/shade better, but these were a rush job before work this morning. :)
If you'd like any other points/comparison shots, let me know. I included the Para-2 because 1) I just got it and its awesome and 2) it appears to have a high ownership/EDC level on the forums, so I thought people might be interested in comparison.

Wow, I didn't realize its as long as the Endura. And it seems to have a similar length blade. That liner looks thick, how thick is it? And this is making me want to order one right now. After I take care of my other worries, I'll pick this up :D This will be my first Spydie that I've bought this year, I feel bad about that :o thanks for the pictures

i think it looks great.

anyone want to make a youtube vid so we can hear the noise during opening?

found one, i don't think it would be a deal breaker for me:

+1
that makes two of us. I wish that sound would be a little louder :). I like it a lot. It makes very special knife even more special.

I've found one issue with the navaja. I moved the clip for tip-down carry and almost could not open the knife. I guess when fully tightened down, the clip puts a serious amount of pressure on the pivot screw it covers. As I loosened up the clip screws, the blade became easier to open (though not as easy as when set for tip-up or no clip), but then I run the risk of having loose screws on my clip. I guess I could try to tighten down the pivot on the clip side and then loosen the pivot on the opposite side, but I think I'll just drill out a hole in the clip like the endura's to avoid pressure on the pivot.

I was interested in tip-down carry because tip-up leaves a fair amount of the knife exposed, whereas tip down give a slightly deeper pocket carry.

Edit: Put my Endura clip on the Navaja and still experienced the same problem with clip screws tightened down. Maybe I'm tightening my screws excessively, but I still think it is weird that this even effects blade deployment.

I carry C83 Persian for years and fortunately this never was a problem for me, also I strongly prefer tip up carry. In addition I do not like any holes on bolsters and will be only happy if Spyderco would get rid of them, so I will have the reason to buy one more Navaja, but probably they will fix this instead.

does anyone have a pic of the blade spine, close-up or a top view of where the blade grind ends and the spyderhole and whatnot? lol if that makes sence

im curious as to does the spine of the blade slowly thin out where it meets the drop off or is it just like thick, then thin?
