A few days ago I wore my Buck Hartsook neck knife on a walk in the woods with my dog. As I was on private property I slipped it inside on my t-shirt. We didn't walk too far then sat down and cooked lunch. I didn't use the knife for anythingthen and just left it in my shirt while we took a brief nap. When we got back to the truck I pulled the knife out of my shirt and found it was half way out of its sheath. This little knife is shapened like a razor and could have cut me badly. I don't have an extensive collection of neck knives, a Becker, Hellion, and a Cold Steel Ready Edge none of which has ever come out of its sheath. I am in the market for an upright sheath for the Buck now because there just isn't anything sticking off it to secure it upside down.

I like the convience of a neck knife for repetetive tasks especially when I'm sitting down. I don't have to fold a knife or set it in the dirt.

Anyone else have this experience and how did you solve the problem?

I had a cold steel spike fall out of the sheath, and land right on its tip on the concrete. That was bad. I don't really trust it anymore, and just don't carry knifes in that manner. I think it had to do with the shock when the sheath slams against your body if it's not tucked in, if you are running and such it will loosen like mine did. I wouldn't have a problem with a mini pendelton hunter, because that has the extra snap release thing too.

The solution is to wear your Becker Necker around your neck. That is where that knife belongs. Put your little Buck fixed blade into a survival tin with some mini kit gear and carry that in your pocket.

I have been looking for a neck knife and wondering about this very thing. I supose the best thing is to have a locking type sheath, like the kydex ones from kabar.

A solution is to wear a neck knife with the handle up and the point down. That is how they are worn in Scandinavia -- under the coat so the handle is warm. That's how I wear small knives as neckers in the Winter.

Wearing it handle down is like a flat roof. In theory it works, but . . . . .

I have ocasionally wear my brkt mini canadian as a necker in the factory sheath with the handle up reaching the knife is not as fluid as an upside down grab but you get used to it quick...

I wear neckers all of the time point up and the secret is.............. don't tell anyone I told you............
Get a GREAT kydex sheath for it!!!!
That's it- a great sheath means you will not loose it.
You can get a sheet of kydex and a heat gun and make one that fits your style and have the pride of a personalized sheath.

I like BM's Snody 210TK. It has an adjustment screw with o-ring (between the kydex leaves). I wear mine every day and it has yet to slip or come out accidently.

I wrap a rubber band around the sheath of the hartsook and never had it fall out since.

I had a crkt dogfish slip out of its sheath and stick right in the top of my foot(yes I was barefoot) needless to say that was the last time I wore that knife as a necker, I tried heating up the kydex to make it fit tighter but with no avail.

I like the Hartsook, but not for it's use as a neck knife. The sheath doesn't hold the knife well enough to carry point up. Also, it appears to me to be designed as a handle for the knife, so wrapping it with anything to hold the knife in seems counter productive to me, but laying a wrap of tape around the knife when the sheath is acting as the handle works very well.

Buying a really reliable sheath will cost you more than the knife.

Try the rubber band or tape wrap to tighten it, or rig it for handle up carry, or, fix it to your best, or carry it in an emergency kit -- or in your wallet.

I have too many neckers that would never fall out of their sheaths, but they aren't cheap little razor knives, either. The Hartsook isn't worth the risk.

Dunno guys , this is why personally I do not like the idea of having a razor sharp piece of steel with a sharp point right under my neck , next to my heart , veins , heart , esophagus etc etc....:D

Don't you folks find it just as convenient and much safer to carry in your pocket ?

I had the same thing happen with a Cold Steel Bird and Trout. Came out while I was wearing a tucked in t shirt and as I sat down it cut my belly fairly good, not deep but a good slice. Of course, that has a little tiny sheath that is fairly useless. Never happened with my Becker Necker, but frankly, I stopped wearing neckers after that happened.

Of course not- how do you carry your pockets when you walk around naked most of the day???:p

In all seriousness- no I find neck carry is more convenient as it is accessible with both hands and I have never had a mishap with any neck knife in 10+ years of carrying one for most jobs that I have held (pocket carry in University though). You just have to make sure the sheath is appropriate- that is why I have taken to makin' kydex sheaths myself- it is cheaper than buying one, easy (hell if I can do it acceptably), and fun. This is not to say I make a new sheath for every necker I have- CRKT Fixed Falcon, Outdoor Edge Wedge 1 & 2, Spyderco Ronin all had very trustworthy sheaths IMO.
But hey- it is what works for the individual, and I do carry on pocket as well (as opposed to in pocket most of the time).

I wear a kilt , so I dont have pockets.

:D

How do you like the little Fixed Falcon ? I love mine and I'm suprised at how sharp it gets for the money.

I think it is great once I ground off the thumb ramp- it just did not work for me. I used it for a couple of years in a warehouse and it never let me down. Good use for a couple of bucks!
