Neck Knives?

How many of you actually carry a neck knife? If so, what are you carrying? Do you ever use it, or just defense? Thanks in advance.

I don't carry a knife for SD, really, although all tools have that potential. My purpose for a neck knife these days is mainly when I am in the garden or doing some handi-work around the house. So here, my application is not one of concealment, but rather an easily accessible tool.

In the past, I ALMOST hurt myself quite badly when I fell over and the buttend of the neck knife speared into the ground, shoving the Kydex sheath hard into my throat. That hurt ! One of the reasons I am psychologically "off" neck knives. ;) Jason.

When I have carried a neck knife, I carry my Fallkniven Garm G1 Fighter. I have gone through many, many neck knives, and this one is the MOST comfy for me.

I have one of those cold steel spikes with the tanto edge. It is a very handy knife and is great, I use the secondary edge for scraping/ detail work will painting and the main edge to open/cut whatever. I got mine for for under 30 dollars and the 420 steel sharpens easily(holds the edge decently) and doesn't rust.

I have an Emerson La Griffe I've been wearing for a few years now and only notice it when I'm not wearing it. I don't use it much, really it is my " In case of emergency...pull " knife. Most likely it would come into play if my other knife(s) were taken or missing or it simply was what I could reach at the moment. I also have a Dawson custom Spike ( Cold Steel makes the production version ) and it is not only wickedly sharp but gives the impression you could pry open a safe with it.

I often carry a Becker Necker now. Sometimes carry it "in the city" under fleece or sweatshirt, but tend to use it more as a field knife when out in the countryside. Its a good, solid-feeling stout blade.

I like to wear my Bitteroot, and now I generally wear a bigger knife, a Strider ED, which is also a flat, skeletal handled blade. Personal utility. I doubt even the Strider would do me much good for self-defense.

Emerson La Griffe with an edge from Mr. Willey of Willey knives in Greenwood, DE. I wear it while on duty-Police in S. Florida. It for SD only. Its so sharp I'm afraid to take it out!

Neck carry is great to have a knife handy in the winter, when bulky coats can make belt carry uncomfortable. Lots of peoples from very cold climates carry their knives like that, the innuit for example.

Even some bushcraft authors like Kochansky carry their moras hanging from their neck.

I have two neck knives, a custom and a Fallkniven WM-1. I bought the WM-1 as a novelty, but it is a great little knife which gets lots of use.

I carry and use my Busse Assault Shaker on a daily basis. Not for SD, but it makes a great, stout all purpose user.

Does anyone have any experience with Hide Away knives? If so, what models, and which sheathes work well for you for what purpose? Thanks.

HideAway Knives are excellent! The design works better than you can imagine until you've actually used one. They are fast, secure, and powerful. The grip and angle of the blade allow you to either slash or punch efficiently.

Mine is a "Curvy" with a clip-point recurve blade. I generally carry it IWB, but I have also used SheathStiks to attach it just inside the opening of my vest or jacket. When hiking I clip it to the strap of my backpack.

Here is a review I wrote of mine from a while back...

I cycled through all of these at work in the last 2 years: Outdoor Edge Wedge1&2, CRKT Carcajou and Falcon, Spyderco Ronin, Gerber River Shorty, and a custom Fred Perrin Street Cleaver. All of these are for work purposes, not self defence. Currently the ones that made the cut for day to day is the Wedge 2, Falcon and Perrin. Will probably get a Timberline mini pitbull and a Snody designed Banchmade wharncliffe in the near future.

personnaly, i often wear a Griffe of Fred PERRIN, a small skeleton one... and i use it sometimes, but not for SD :D

I mostly carry my CQB Cuda ( jr model ) as a neck knife, although it is a little on the heavy side, meaning if you bend forward you can almost see the entire profile of the knife. I also have a boker model that has a magnet made into the kydex sheath. The boker is lighter than the Cuda CQB but you can still tell that there is somthing more than a necklace under your shirt. The magnet in the sheath is supposed to help hold the knife in place, and is handy when using the knife instead of laying it down somewhere you can just hold it to your chest on the outside of your shirt and it will stick to you enough to free up both hands for a quick minute.

That Boker is probably a Bud Nealy design. He uses the magnet in his own sheaths.
