Did a search and didn't find a thread specifically devoted to neckties and traditionals. When growing up, knowing how to tie your own necktie was expected once you got dry behind the ears, today it's a dying art. Only needed to learn a few knots; Four-in-hand, half-Windsor and full-Windsor were plenty for my needs. Knot selection was dependent on tie width and length keeping collar width in mind as well. Getting the length correct took practice, especially when you were still growing and your Dad's ties were still a bit long. Sometimes would have to retie it a half dozen times to get it just right, no twists and back portion just slightly shorter than the front, neither flapping below your belt when standing straight. Tying a real bow tie isn't easy but in the military we made fun of folks who wore a clip-on, especially when wearing service or mess dress uniforms. Don't wear a tie often nowdays, but found a couple colorful ones today that took me back a few years. Please share pic(s) of yours, but no clip ons (except bow ties, tough for everyone)!!! ;)

Are skinny, wide, or bowties "in style" now?

I never once in my so called "life" claimed to be stylish.
I wear a (clip on) Western/Cowboy bowtie once in a while.
I'm not really sure why I bother with it. My beard covers it up so no one but me knows I have it on....

(Them "Duck Dynasty" dude's all got short beards compared to mine.)

I have a lot of cool ties even though I hardly ever wear one. I have Marvel super hero ties, fly fishing and trout ties, Star Wars ties, and of course your standard boring pattern ties. But I thought you all would get a kick out of seeing the tie I wore 15 years ago to the interview for my current teaching position. I now consider it to be my "Lucky Tie". :)

John, as a fan of Calvin and Hobbes, I think your Spaceman Spiff tie is fantastic!:thumbsup::) Of course, the Ancient TC is also first-class!:thumbsup:

T tiguy7 , that silver knife tie clip is outstanding - very classy!!:cool::thumbsup:

I have a "test tie" that I bought in 1969 and I've worn it for almost every math test I've taken (as a student) or given (as a teacher) since then. For the past year, I've been using this Victorinox Money Clip that I got last summer as a tie clip for my test tie. Neither tie nor clip is very fashionable, but they're meaningful to me (and at least some of my students). ;)

I've never worn one, just browsing the thread. But I gotta say has that little sponge been around 15 years already!?

Wow, first I find a classic country station thinkin I'd hear some Waylon and Willie, but played stuff I listened to in high school, now Spongebob nearly 2 decades old:eek: where'd the time go? I inadvertently told a fib earlier, I remembered I wore a bowtie when I was 7 and was ringbearer in my aunts wedding. But I didn't tie it, think one of my uncles did.

Those are the only knots you need, I think. Use a four-in-hand most of the time. Prefer the asymmetrical knots.

You're getting old, my friend! At least no one called you "old-timer" this week. Got gas on Monday and had to walk in the store to get my receipt. I held the door for an older gentleman, and he said, "Oh, no! You go first--you're an old-timer"!

Prester John Prester John that's true, but I'll say its been a good ride so far, been in the ditch a couple times, but that's part of it to I reckon. JohnDF JohnDF mentioned bolo ties I have worn one of those a handful of times. I have a Navajo silver one tucked away at my Dad's. With a cameo of a horse head done in horn and M.O.P. wore that one in my sisters wedding as the men wore jeans a white button down, black cowboy boots and bolo ties. No hats we was in church. I actually remember I had my Vic tinker in my pocket.

Go to a Willie Nelson concert. Went a few years ago, and my wife and I were probably the youngest ones there!
