Need a flatter blade. What fixed blades have thin handles?

Get something that is cordwraped then either rewrap it with paracord that you have taken the core out of or just leave the cord off.

Thanks, but as I've said before, I shy from anything that looks even remotely tactical, so I try to avoid paracord..although I do have a CS True Flight Thrower.

My Orion Knives Caper arrived Friday (another good recommendation off this thread:thumbup: ) so now that gives me 4...I just need one more (one for each day of the workweek- I like rotation :D ):

The list:
Benchmade Activator
Bob Dozier Kit knife
Orion Caper
Bear & Sons drop-point Hunter

The Ontario TAK-1 might fit the bill if I can make the handle smaller.

Thanks Mike (and Rat), that's a good idea. Any special things I need to know about sanding micarta, or handles in general? What grit would you recommend? Would I need to use successively finer grits, or could I do it all with, say, 400? Finally, what about the handle pins- wouldn't they protrude above the sanded handle surface?

You epoxy and pin the scales making sure the epoxy stick to the pins. When dry, quickly grind the protruding pins with a sharp 50 grit belt. If you create too much heat you will burn the micarta, so do it quick. Rough shape the micarta with the 50 grit, and then move to a 120 grit belt to remove the 50 grit grinding marks. Then hand-sand using 120 grit emery, fabric baked abrasive to smooth and shape. Then use 400 grit emery, fabric backed abrasive to remove the 120 grit marks. Then go back to the belt sander with a 400 grit cork belt with green compound and polish the pin ends. Then just a final polish on a cotton buffing wheel with green compound to give the final polish.

I wear a mask or have a fan blowing the dust away. Micarta is paper and phenolic resin pressed under heat and pressure. My dad worked at the factory when it was called Bakelite.

I prefer a flat oval handle on my knives and I also like slim (non-bulky) handles.

Check out this picture of an Ultimate Caper it is less than 3/8" in thickness at its thickest point. Feel free to give me a call OR if you are going to be at Blade in Atlanta stop by the table and handle them yourself.

Let me know if I can help you out.

That looks stunning, less is certainly more there:thumbup:

I think I have found my EDC small blade... I have a Bark River Blackwater boot knife. I took the clip off the sweet carbon fiber sheath and just drop it in my pocket. Very sharp and pointy blade, thin "three finger" length blade. That is some sweeeet Kreinage above though...

Tom, that caper is simply flawless. I'm off to browse your website. I'm not going to be in Atlanta, but I have a sneaking suspicion that I'll be contacting you soon ;).

Here's a pic of my knife, or it's identical twin.

Got the exact same knife myself in antique ivory and it's really workmanlike and well-finished. I had a leather sheath with a clip made and that works excellently on inside pockets:thumbup:

There is the possibility to get a blank Fallkniven F1 or WM1 blade and do the handle the way you want.

soupah: You are making an excellent choice, in getting one of Tom Krein's knives!!
