Need a good chopper!!!!

Kershaw Outkast.

As interesting as knifetest.com is, I really wouldn't use it as your primary rating system. Comfort, edge geometry, long term practical use causes wear with less tear from short abuse tests. its like buying a car based entirely off of crash test results.

Not trying to be inflamatory, but I would think someone who has been here as long as you should know better.
Very poor and way overpriced IMO. The $9 cheaperthandirt knives or the Cold Steel Kurkri machete $17, blow it away.
I would be hard pressed to call $70 overpriced for a US made(Olean, NY) blade of US made steel(1095 Cro-van). Add to that the fact that you can contact the designer and chief engineer right here on BF.c, and the pendulum swings the other way, in my opinion, of course.

For real proof.......http://knifetests.com/ there's no arguing with real proof. Now you'll say "we don't hit bricks etc...." but I say - in a real life chopping scenario you may encounter nails, stones, and other hard objects. Now if you're attacking zombies or bad guys then it's great, otherwise I'm not buying one. :thumbdn:

"Real proof" is an extremely subjective term when dealing with knifetests.com. This topic has been done a thousand times over , so lets not do it here.

To each his own, and you get what you pay for, and so on. :)

What is long term practical use when we're talking about "Need a good chopper!!!!"

I'm thinking, something that's a rugged, bad-ass chopper like a Busse or anything of that ilk, doesn't have to have that name or big price tag, but has to be a real hardore Chopper. That's what comes to my mind anyway. YMMV

Volvo built a reputation on car crash results. Other companies also blow their whistles when they get a model with good car crash results.

I had to read the whole thread :D Thanks Ankerson!

That's some chopping going on there!

Yeah we do some real chopping over in the Busse forum.

I'm headed that way right now. I don't know if I have the muscle to handle those big blades like in that thread though. I can handle a katana pretty well though - but that's two hands. Maybe it's like golf "let the club do the work" :)

I always see Busse knives up for sale - why do you think that is?

A lot of collectors buy extras durning the model runs and sell them off at later dates. :D

Others buy a lot of them then sell off a few to fund their next one etc. :)

They are not that bad to swing, I have a lot of chopping videos posted up, link in my sig. :)

I used the cheaper than dirt blade, during batoning wood just hanging onto the handle was enough pressure that blew a side potion of the handle out, enough that the handle was rendered useless. Blade is still OK, but for $10 a pizza really is a better deal..... For under $120 there's quite a few choices... Rangers being another....

A pictures worth a thousands words but still, LOL the knives he hit are almost mild steel, and no flaws in the coating? A resharpened edge? Nah man.... I know the busse are tough I own em... But Jesus the egdes do get damaged too, everything about them are good, but it's time to quit selling one side of the story...

Nah, Mike said it didn't damage the edge at all on the NMFBM and the ASH1 had a slight edge roll. :)

Oh I know the edges can be damaged, damaged a few edges on mine hitting Concrete and rocks. :D

Right, but mild steel is just that, mild steel, edges being much thinner than the busse isn't much if a test.. Although they look impressive to newbies asking questions...

The edges on the NMFBM's are very fine, much finer than the other FBM's, I know because I have one, full convex grind down to a fine edge. That's one of the reasons they chop so well.

There isn't much short of a chainsaw or a full size felling axe that will out chop one.

Chopping a LFK... it's hollow ground, a folder and definitely NOT a chopper itself.

I just subscribed to your YT channel Ankerson and will watch videos tonight.

I just posted a new thread at Knife Test forum to get opinions on what I should get. I'm going to get a hardcore chopper. Thinking about the Dogfather or a Battle Mistress - details are over there...anyways.

I'm looking forward to watching those videos. I love chop-offs, Noss's tests and stuff. I have to be honest, I ususally use a .357 magnum with HP's or a 12 gauge to dismember old computer towers! :D

That was that long blade he used in that linked thread to chop the computer with? Too small for a katana but mean looking.

Thanks man. :)

That was a NMFBM that he used on the Tower, 11.5" blade 1/4" thick. :)

I will head over there. :)

I completely disagree. I watched those videos before I bought my BK-9 and bought it anyway. I have done some chopping with it and it works well. I really don't give much credence to knifetests.com - their tests only seem applicable if you are the sort of person to horribly abuse knives and wants to know what they will take. Hitting a nail or concrete while chopping wood wouldn't even come close to what NOS does - he reapetedly hits concrete until the knife breaks.

Chopping wood with a BK-9 caused no edge damage whatsoever - it is a good knife for 70 bucks and makes a pretty decent chopper.

It looks like the bk-9 from knifetests was the camillus one. Hasn't kabar changed the steel on those?

They probably have by now. I have no axe to grind with KA-BAR, one of my favorites is my USMC G.I. Kabar it's a cool knife.
