I gave a guy at work a cheap Chinese folder 3 days ago and he asked me to sharpen it. I told him I wouldn't and that he should get a decent knife instead. $60 is the absolute most he will spend, and he wants something pretty good size. 3.5" or so blade with a full size handle. Similar in size to my Emerson cqc 10. I told him he can't go wrong with Kershaw. USA made and several choices under the $60 mark. I'd love to hear your suggestions!

There are many very nice Kershaw offering as you have said. Also, many from Spyderco like the Endura, Delica, Native. Think though if USA made is important under $60 Kershaw is your best bet, cheek out some of the Buck offerings, maybe something in the Vantage series will peak his interest.

That's great that you were able to get him to upgrade his knife, a step in the right direction for him. Make sure you teach him how to sharpen it.

Spyderco Tenacious is nice for the price (~$35) also for a little more, it's "big brother" the Resilience is still less than $60.

Bob Dozier folders (K Bar) are very nice too. They are ~$20. They are lock backs.

Kershaw for sure. Tell him to take a look at the Shallots, Blurs, and Skylines.

Kershaw leek. It's on a list of mine to get too. I saw a composit blade one that is D2 steel(blem) at kershawguy.com, then you could show him what a good edge is.

Why would you give somebody a cheap Chinese folder not worth sharpening? :D

I was talking about knives and mentioned I had a bunch of cheapos that I got for free from places like knifecenter and blade hq. He wanted one of them. I've been trying to get this guy to buy a decent knife for over a year. He's one of those guys who buys the $10 swap meet special. Hope actually buys one now. Thanks for the reccomendations!

My Spyderco Tenacious has served me well

another vote for dozier hunter or kershaw skyline
crkt m21 or m4 would be a good one, too.

If there are still some left the Tactical Speed Bump (speed bump blade with spec bump handle) is well under $60 and a really nice knife. It's a bit much for a first good knife, but it's an amazing deal and won't be around long.

Hard to beat the Endura in the $60 range, >3.5" blade, with a full-sized handle. The RAT-1 is another good option for less $.

Kershaw Blur, or the Tactical speedbump over at the amazon jungle.

Can't go wrong with a Made in USA (Oregon) knife with their killer warranty and free lifetime sharpening!
