Well.. me and my brother found a nice hiking trail, and about 3 to 4 miles past were no one else go (beacuse its pretty scary walking on a land slide) theres a cave...
we went in but we only could see maybe a 100 feet ahead. so i did need a headlamp and i say this is a great time to buy one... so is there one that is good for about $40???

Be sure to advise your next of kin before you explore too far in a cave or mineshaft or whatever...

next of kin???

theres no climbing, just want to be able to see if theres any cool rock formations, or anything.... were not going to do anything stupid either :D

My Petzl Tactikka failed. I avoid them.

The Princeton Tec Quad was cheaper, gasketed and waterproof, and brighter.

I don't know how deep a cave this is but one of the first rules of caving is at least THREE light sources. Seriously, if you need a lamp to explore it, you should talk to people who know what they are doing.

Petzl E+Lite is my favorite, but is only for casual or emergency use, not for long term or caving. You will find that most headlamps are designed to flood a close to mid-range area near you which is ideal for a headlamp but not so good for seeing distance. I would recommend a Petzl Tikka or Tikka+, or if you are really serious about getting a quality headlamp, a Stenlight.

You should get a headlamp and a handheld flashlight with some throw. One inexpensive but reliable favorite is the Streamlight Propolymer 4AA Luxeon for about $30 or the Underwater Kinetics lensed version, the eLED Fire. Another good option would be a Surefire 6PL or G2L.

There are so many headlamps in that price range it can make you crazy. I have experience with three of them.

I have PrincetonTec Aurora and EOS. Both work very well and are years old now (I forget exactly when I bought them, before 2004). EOS has much longer throw, but I like Aurora a little better for working around camp, reading, etc. since a lot of range is not needed and the more concentrated light of the EOS can be a disadvantage.

But I hardly use them any longer. My newest and most favorite by a good margin is the Zebralight H50-Q5. http://www.zebralight.com/

I am not a spelunker so do not know how they would work for that.

Run down to your nearest REI and pick up a Petzl Tikka. Its $35 and an awesome headlamp for the money. However, if you have about twice the dough to spend pick up the Petzl Myo XP. Its one of the best headlamps on the market and the battery life is phenomenal.

I dont know about you but everything i think to my self oh it should be no problem and i wont take any stupid chances ..................... I do something stupid and have something to show for it lol... Let people know where you are... Get a head lamp and a back up flash light or even two just cause...

I've had nothing but great performance from my Tikka XP. BUT I've never used it in any "extreme" conditions and I know many people worry about it's lack of waterproofing.
