Need a large piece of NS

It looks like I am going to have to drive over there and cast a bar with you. I'll bring the graphite block since you have the milling machine. You have probably spent more time on Google then it would have taken to make a machinable bar.

Besides, doesn't this look like more fun then clicking endless links?

Youre right Ive been checking all the leads and links. I have one promising lead in Seattle today but if that doesnt pay off you need to pay me a visit. Come on over!

Alaska Copper and Brass does not even list NS with zinc in it. It looks like they only carry cupranickle alloys unless they have some not listed.

I have NS powder and may have to forge weld it in a canister but if its available I would rather buy it.

Thanks guys for the offer but I cant stack it up and make it look right. I wonder if I can fuse it like mokume? Any experience doing that?

I have taken a bunch of scraps and put them in a crucible made out of a 2" pipe with a cap welded to the bottom, then put it in the forge until melted, take it out and let it cool in the crucible then grind the crucible off and then grind all the scale off the NS. If you wanted a 3/4" X 2" X 2" piece you will have to oversize your crosible a little bit so you will have some extra to grind off, because the outside of the NS tends to be porous. Make sure that the NS is melted thoroughly or you will end up with a bunch of hols on the inside.

I dont really want to cast one. I cant put up with even one void or air bubble.

I could use Nickel 200 for this project. Does anybody have any?

Bruce I have some 99.6% pure nickel 4" pipe. .250 walls. I could cut you off a strip say 1 1/4 wide and you could stack and forge weld it to get what you need. Would that work. Jim

I am more than willing to try it. What do you want for some? I think I should buy more than I need just in case I screw up one on the mill.

Sorry I have not repiled yet. Had some life events going on. I will send you the nickel. Sometime you send me a bit of damascus. Small blade size, bolster size whatever. Just need address. Jim

Thanks much Jim. You have a PM

Bruce the pipe was actually 3". I cut off a band almost 2" wide and then cut that so I had 2 half bands. I flatened those on the anvil to make 2 pieces about 2"x 4 1/2" x 1/4". They are coming via a flat rate envelpe. I would think because we are pretty close you should get them early next week. Let us know how it works out. Jim
