I need a reliable beater folder for home chores and such. Something I can keep a razor edge on. In around 3.5" but not much more than 4". A solid lock, preferably not liner unless it's a really sturdy one. Around $50 or a little more.

It's going to cut down boxes and get tape gum all over it as it's main task.

I can't bring myself to beat my edc Tidioute.

I don't want a fixed blade for this particular knife.

I have some ideas, but I'm curious what ya'll think.

Thanks

i have a kershaw needs work that i designate for similar tasks. it is east to get crazy sharp and it is really sturdy. not really my style though.

Years ago, when I was working to put myself through university, I had a job that required me to open boxes and cut rope, tape, some soft metal, and plastic. I purchased a CRKT M-16, and it did the job admirably. The flipper was particularly useful, and the blade held up to regular abuse. Amazingly, it still has no blade play, and it takes a decent edge. It's still kicking around my shop and sees some use as a beater folder.

All the best,

- Mike

If that's the main tasks, why not a Superknife? I don't go anywhere without one.

All kinds of great recommendations so far. I'd go for a Delica myself but I don't think you could go wrong with anything that anyone else has sugested.

Spyderco Co-pilot 2" in VG10, if box opening/cutting is in order than a very short blade will be ideal IMO. It will be less likely that you will over penetrate a box and damage its contents. $60.00 gets you in the club.

I just posted this pic in another thread. Kershaw Shallot gets my vote.

Beefy lock, easy to clean. I have batonned this thing through knots when building a fire. I was hitting it so hard with another piece of firewood so hard people were afraid I was going to break it. Still has no lock play.

I had done the same thing before, and it loosened a little, but after I took it apart, cleaned it up, and put it back together it was nice and tight.

Kershaw Lahar. Fairly large (3.5"), G10 slabs, good flipper and very nice VG10 steel. Tip up/down, RH. Liner lock, but very stout. $ 50 bucks.

Have you thought about a Byrd ? China Spyderco, pretty sharp, pretty tough , pretty inexpensive. depending on the deal you find 20 or 30 bucks. for that price you can beat on it. Pat

It would be hard to beat a Buck/Strider 889SBMF for the $. The new models have a thicker line lock & they are built Very solid ! Also while you are looking at Buck check out the Buck 112 I think (smaller version of the 110) .
The other Knife that I think of for a work horse would be the Kershaw Needs Work

Ka-Bar Dozier for about $20, and they have a larger model for $30.
I second the SuperKnife for this, though.
