Need a reliable beater folder

Cold Steel pocket bushman. They take a likin keep on tickin and ya don't care wht ya do to it. Inexpensive and really solid.

I would say a opinel, the thin blade goes through cardboard with little drag

Brilliant choice. I converted a bunch of florists to these when I lived in central London. Those and Tuff Cut scissors became the tools of choice. Those women were not cutlery folk but they loved them. They worked on a daily basis not just with flowers but with some pretty fair sized bits of ornamental stick, tapes, hot glue, boxes from the market, various spray on stuff, string and so on. It gets a bit weird like than in London when people prefer to be called floral artists to florists. It started with one I customized for my woman at the time, then all her buddies wanted pimped out ones too. Great beater blade the Opinel. The only downside was that sometimes a dizzy bint would leave one in a bucket, but I could usually dry it out so it would open again and sand the rust off it. And nobody cried if it was irrecoverable, just throw it away and bring on a new one.

I need a reliable beater folder for home chores and such. Something I can keep a razor edge on. In around 3.5" but not much more than 4". A solid lock, preferably not liner unless it's a really sturdy one. Around $50 or a little more.

It's going to cut down boxes and get tape gum all over it as it's main task.

I can't bring myself to beat my edc Tidioute.

I don't want a fixed blade for this particular knife.

I have some ideas, but I'm curious what ya'll think.

Thanks

This one meets your criteria...nothing dulls a blade faster than cutting boxes...when the this blade dulls, replace it with a new one....and it folds!
Lowes, $8.

My choice for the kind of chores you are describing is a fully serrated Spyderco Tenacious. G-10 handles, beefy liner lock, good steel (similar to AUS 8) that takes and keeps a razor edge easily and the serrations will stay sharper longer than most PE blades under the same use. Bonus is, you can get 'em for around $30. Mine is my designated beater knife around the house and yard.

Check WallyWorld... the local one still stocks the Buck 110 in 420HC for $25 - great lockback/stout knife. Too pretty for such use, but quite cost effective - and easily re-edged. Everyone should have a 110.

I'm thinking I'm down to these

Buck 110
Kabar Mule
Boker M Type

I figure I might as well get a beefier one. I'm sure cardboard won't be the only thing it cuts.

Snag ya one of those CPM110V Shallot knives from Grand Prairie knives while they still have some and get you a good beater. I'd say snag a ZDP model but the blade is markedly thinner on that folder compared to the 110V model. That 110V blade looks to be quite stout in my opinion. I carried mine all day yesterday just getting to know it and its filled the void in my pocket nicely for the time being.

+1 for the spyderco byrd line or else maybe check out benchmade's red box offerings

Years ago, when I was working to put myself through university, I had a job that required me to open boxes and cut rope, tape, some soft metal, and plastic. I purchased a CRKT M-16, and it did the job admirably. The flipper was particularly useful, and the blade held up to regular abuse. Amazingly, it still has no blade play, and it takes a decent edge. It's still kicking around my shop and sees some use as a beater folder.

All the best,

- Mike

+1 for the M16.. I use mine as a beater as well, works great for chores around/outside the house. Is good to use with gloves on too, if that's a concern of yours.

Well.. I was all ready to buy a cheap beater. Then I saw a paramilitary for sale so I picked that up.

So now I have what some people call a "cheap beater", and what other people call "The folder I'd take if I could only have 1 knife to survive on".

Best of both worlds. Right? :)

If you are going to be trashing the knife, why spend real knife money on it?

Might check out Blade Play...a few manual knives...some hold a pretty good edge; other stuff is auto knives...some good, some junk...but..cutting boxes doesn't require a great steel.

Good hunting.

WHOOPS, didn't see your most recent post. Nevermind. :(

Ka-Bar Dozier for about $20, and they have a larger model for $30.
I second the SuperKnife for this, though.

I carry the kabar Dozier all the time, and I forget that it was so inexpensive. It's really tough and lightweight and holds a good edge for being not the best ever steel

If that's the main tasks, why not a Superknife? I don't go anywhere without one.

+1. I know this isn't exactly what your looking for, but it meets your qualifications well. You can replace the blades if they get gummed up or if they get dull and they are really cheap. Home depot sells them as cheap as $6.
