need gentleman's knife recommendation - it's complicated :)

...in my experience (I am in San Francisco, and work in a big software company)... only GEC (or similar traditional knives) are truly accepted in a typical white-collar office environment, none of the modern folders are.

It might be location specific. I work in a hospital/research/office environment and carry "modern/tactical" folders daily and have given them as gifts to colleagues who also carry and use them at work - Kershaw 1740 NRG, Byrd Meadowlark 2, Spyderco Dragonfly 2, Spyderco Calypso 3, Benchmade 585 Mini-Barrage, Bucklite 484, Kershaw Leek - not very large knives but definitely not "traditional" styles. Yes, there are those LA/SanFran wackos and NYC paranoids that consider anything sharp to be a weapon, even pencils, but most people here have sense and appreciate the utility of such tools. Of course, all that matters is whether those with the authority to fire you have such sense. Those that do not, in my experience, find "traditionals" just as offensive as moderns.

got the volt in stainless steel today - really don't like it so I won't even bother reviewing it. Once i get the urban trapper I'll do a quick comparison of all 5 before sending back hopefully only 4 of them.

The Benchmade 530 sounds perfect for you, I tried to PM you about something related but I couldn't send one.

Buy once cry once; Benchmade 531. Slim, light, beautiful and classy looking but enough blade and strong enough to be a serious knife. I especially love it with a Contego deep carry clip. FWIW, I bought mine for $95 on the forum.

It's almost $100... And while the specs seem good, it still seems on the large side

I'm trying to say this in a way that won't run afoul of the rules...I tried to message you but couldn't because I have a 530 and you can get one for way less than $100...hint hint!

Please PM/email me and I can fill you in on the details.

Just got my Bladehq Kershaw Premium Skyline with CF handles and S30V for 99 bucks. Serialized limited edition! Very light, not Dinky like a Runt or a BM Impel but it feels like a bic lighter in the bottom of my pocket. The one on top is too scary for a gentlemen's knife!

Kershaw piston. Around $60. Angled thumbstuds and flipper. Decent steel. Not to pointy. Light for how big it is. Rides well in the pocket. Grippy g10. I actually love the knife. Carried it a lot. Its cut all kinds of things. Its been submerged in water. Pretty good corrosion resistance. Sharpens easily and mirror edge possible. No complaints.

I've tried the skyline before (albeit the regular version) and honestly didnt care for it. not sure what it is.. it just felt weird to me somehow. maybe it's the weight to size ratio .. either way, that one's out for me

Did you try the leek?

the more i look at all these different options, the more I think i'm looking for <3" blade and <3.5oz weight and < 1/2" width - does that help? :)

I got a Kershaw Scallion on sale at Walmart Monday for 29 bucks. Internet price is 35. It's pretty small. 2.5 inc blade, 6 inches total. 420HC blade, polymer handles, it is a total small gentlemen's knife. They make one in damascus steel, aluminum handles for 73 bucks so it's a cheapo, I really like it! Here is mine, you might scope wally world, they are probably still on sale.

Generally if I use the word "splurge" I'm going to go over my budget a bit. Given that possibility, here are some options:

Protech Newport - ~$140

View attachment 558069

Protech Runt - A bunch of variants ~$125

Mikov Predator - Agressive name, nifty lever action. Instant hit at my office. ~$100

Premium Skyline - Just can't go wrong with a skyline. ~$100

Kershaw Chill - My original office carry. Polish the G10 and it looks great. Save money to splurge elsewhere. ~$20

My idea of a gentleman's knife doesn't have a thumb stud or a pocket clip. If you want a good gentleman's knife for dress carry, how about a Buck 503?

I bought my 530 for office and shorts carry. It is a hair large, but it is so slim and light. Adding a free deep carry clip works real well too.
