Need Good EDC

I can't speak highly enough of the new CTS-XHP Chaparral. If you shop around you can find them for $85 shipped, or less.

Myself, I dont only see 'bang for buck' in the initial paying of the purchase price.
For example, lets say the price difference between a Delica (VG10) and a Para 2 is $50.
You said for EDC, so if you carry that knife for a year, thats a price difference of less then 14cents a day. If you carry it for 5 years its less than 3cents a day.

Get whichever one feels best to you if your able to handle them before buying. If not, I would definitely pick the Para2 even if it takes a while to find one. And you cant go wrong with any of them (I have a Para2 and a Delica).
I would also point out that the Para2 is the most fondly and flicky and fun to handle of the knives your looking at, if that matters to you.

Unless you are pretty confident of your sharpening skills and patience, then I would avoid ZDP-189.

All those listed are great choices, but for the bang for the buck, I'd go for a Delica 4 ffg, VG-10. They go for about $57 online shipped. I love mine. It just disappears on my pocket, and the ffg blade it's a sweet slicer. I'd avoid zdp-189, as it is difficult to maintain, and not as corrosion resistant.

If delica4 is on short list, then also consider a Salt1. After a few hard use/ sharpening sessions, the H1 steel should harden and significantly hold its edge longer. Even though it's marketed towards fishing/diving, there's something liberating when you don't have to worry about corrosion at all on your edc knife.

It won't get any harder, no matter how much you sharpen it. Having said that, I still highly recommend ANY of the salt knives. They are awesome!

Maybe my placebo then. Or my sharpening is getting better. Your experience with H1 is vastly greater than mine, so thanks for the feedback.

I have a Delica 4 saber grind combo edge and a para 2. Both carry great, I really don't notice either one clipped to my pocket, but the para easily feels better in hand. I will say that it is much easier for me to beat on the delica. The para blade feels delicate and being that its not as easy to replace the knife I feel more restrained from using it hard ( flame suit on). Get both if you can.

Most of that opinion is just based on what I've read about h1 and "work hardening". From everything I've gathered it seems the work hardening happens during the manufacturing and blade grind. Apparently normal sharpening and use is not enough to affect the metal. I haven't had mine all that long, but it gets daily use and a lot of sharpening and I don't notice any difference. However, I don't want to be a buzzkill!! Placebos can be fun! I should have just kept my mouth shut. ;)

Like I said, whether it gets harder with time or not, they are spectacular knives! Enjoy!

No buzz kill here. Lol. It's all good man!

I'll also place another vote for bang-4-buck edc: the dragonfly. Any steel, vg-10, zdp, h1, will be a good choice. Until you handle this knife, you don't realize how much it can be tasked with. I'd say 98% of what's needed by an edc is done with this 1.2oz, sub 2" blade.

This was my gateway drug into spyderco knifes.

Oof! That sounds really familiar!!

lol the dragonfly was my second spydie and it was definitely the one that made me buy more and more. My first was the chaparral and its a nice knife it just wasn't everything I was hoping for, and the dragonfly was :D

I have to say if you want a little nicer knife than the Delica, the Sage 1 is a fantastic EDC, especially if you work in an office environment. The para 2 is a little big (for me) for an office, and the clip on the Sage 1 disappears in your pocket. The Sage 1 is the perfect EDC. But, if I didn't work in an office, I would carry my para 2 every day.

Some years ago I had the chance to handle virtually the entire Spyderco line at that time during a show. After about an hour of handling almost all of them, I walked away with a Stretch CF. It's still my primary EDC. The ergos on the Stretch are incredible. You can get the Stretch now in an FRN with ZDP-189, my favorite knife steel, or in VG-10 for less money. You should definitely give the Stretch a try in your hand before deciding. And lots of others. Everyone's hand and tastes are a little different, and the decision should be in the handling.

On your list, the Delica in ZDP-189 would be a great choice. I don't have issues sharpening my ZDP-189 blades on the Sharpmaker as long as I don't let it get dull (and no knife should ever be dull). The benefit is that ZDP-189 stays sharp for a very long time. VG-10 is a good steel and sharpens more easily, but it also requires sharpening more often.

Bob have you had any chipping or corrosion issues with ZDP-189?
Thanks

No. I use a silicon cloth on it about once a month or so when EDCing, and Otis Special Forces Dry Lube on the pivot. That seems to work fine to prevent corrosion. Haven't noticed any chipping.

Really?? The Search is on!

The Centofante 3 is a great knife also. Not the typical style, but a thing of beauty in its own right. A great tribute to Frank's work to see them keeping it around. Thanks Spyderco!

Anyone love their Native like me out there. Just a great little knife too!
