Need help with heat treating

5160 is a great steel to start with. It will make a great hunter/skinner or large bowie. Many of the ABS JS test knives are made from it.

Chris, 5160 would do very well for the large, chopper/camp knives you make. There's a lot of great info on heat treating available on the internet. Also look through the sticky at the top of the forum.
