So, I recently sold a knife to another member. He sent me his address via PM instead of having it registered to paypal (something I usually won't abide by, but chose to overlook this time).
It turns out that when he wrote his address, he wrote Blah Blah Blah !4th street instead of Blah Blah Blah 14th street. In the midst of the rest of the address I didn't see the mistake.
When not printing labels via paypal, I print them using my stamps.com account. The stamps.com software automatically corrects and reformats the address once you enter it.
Whenever I recieve a shipping address from someone via PM or email, I copy/paste it directly into my stamps.com software, to prevent typos/transcription errors. In this case, it actually "caused" one. That way they get the item sent to the exact address they typed with their own hands.
Anyways, long story short, this guy paid $40 and does not have a knife. It got shipped to the wrong address. It is partially his fault for sending me an incorrect address, and somewhat my fault for not catching the typo.
It find it hard to place blame here, but I also find it hard to decide what a fair resolution would be for the situation. Part of me feels like I did nothing wrong, but part of me says that it isn't right to stiff the guy for accidentally hitting the shift key. I'm really stuck here, and want to find a solution that's fair for both of us.
We're talking $40 total here, this isn't a $500 knife. That doesn't make the principal of the situation any different, and I don't want to do anything unfair.
