Hello All,
I am fairly new to knives and am currently shopping for a knife and would welcome all the recommendations on brands/models I can have. The knife would be used fishing/hunting and for everyday carry. Most likely I would not be fileting fish with it but may used it to clean birds or small game while hunting. Friends have told me to look at Spyderco and SOG, I am looking for a folding knife with the blade anywhere from 3.5" to 5". And would like to spend about $100.
I also wonder about whether I should get one wih part of the blade serrated and if I should look at the automatic or spring open models?
Thanks so much for the brand/model recomendations!
Happy Holidays!

I'd recommend looking at the Spyderco Military and Police 3. Both are slightly over your 100$ mark, both are worth it. They are both very comfortable, very solid knives and cut great with the full flat grinds. The Military is available in a variety of handle and steel options too.

What type of edge you should get depends on what type of cutting you do. Plain edge works better at push cuts or making cleaner, controlled cuts, while serrations can quickly tear certain materials apart and will still be functional after getting pretty dull. I prefer plain edge myself.

Some of my friends might have recommended the same, BUT!: my best friends would have thrown Benchmade and Kershaw into the mix....... (and most would have left SOG out!):D

Welcome to BladeForums!

I'd recommend production knives from Benchmade, Spyderco, and Kershaw before I decided to buy a SOG.

Benchmade, I'd recommend the Doug Ritter RSK Mk1.

Spyderco, I'd recommend the Spyderco Military.

For Kershaw, I like the Shallot.

All are some of my favorite knives to carry day in and day out. Good luck in your pursuit of all things sharp! :D

Thank you all so much for the advice! Look forward to letting you know how my new knife (whichever I end up purchasing) works!

If you are right handed: +1 for the Spyderco Military. I would stick with a full plain edge for a hunting knife. For a fishing knife around salt water, something from the rust proof Spyderco Salt series would be the way to go.

Since you already have another identical thread in this General Knife Discussion forum, I'm going to move this one to Wilderness & Survival Skills for a different mix of readers. It's generally best to go with just the one thread at first, though. Duplicate posts take up unnecessary space and get you overlapping answers.

Get a Buck 110.
For 100 $ you can get a custom version of it with S30V steel

Spyderco, Benchmade will not do ya wrong. Shop here on the forums for a nice used one. Blade tech Pro Hunter's are just awesome. For edc and hunting/skinning duties. All 3 companies will honor their warranty in case you have any problems.

Spydies, BM, or Kershaw are all great knives. However, if it is going to be used to skin game and such, I would go with a Buck 110 as someone stated. It may be a little heavy for EDC, but I still go to that when I want to clean game!

I have had Benchmades fail on me, I cant say the same about Spyderco.

if you are in a survival situation, would you really put your confidence on a little spring for t Axis lock. I did and it failed me at the worst time.

Hey garrett, by your own admission, you're fairly new to knives so why not buy a Mora? 10-15 bucks and no knife I know of will outcut them. I used them for years in preference over Buck, Benchmade, Gerber, Schrade and probably a few I can't think of right now.

We always like to upgrade to a little flash, though, I know I do/did , but why not wait for awhile, use the Mora, and that should give you a better idea of which knife would work for you.

Just my 2 cents.

I've never had a Benchmade fail on me, but their customer service is lacking!

I'm carrying the 110 Ti in the nylon sheath. She ain't heavy, she's no bother. :D

Actually, I find the weight of the standard 110 can be an advantage, since the weight is in the handle, which makes the knife blade-light and VERY easy to control for fine detail work.

Spyderco makes some Good equipment ! I love my Endura4 PE waved. The one I really like is my BladeTech ProHunter Extreme  AWSOME !!!!

Welcome to BFC

That Ritter MK1 looks like the perfect knife. To be clear I have never handled one or even a plain griptillian but after hearing and reading about it, I want one! The Buck 110 is a classic and has a track record proven over the course of decades. Many of my favorite folders are made with the S30V steel. Definitely a good knife steel (in most people's opinion  ). Let us know what you decide. -DT
