Need some fishing gear help!

you should be able to find out on the penn website. just look up the model and read up.. my guess is that it will not be over 12-16lbs.. thats plenty if you get quality line like Berkely big game. thats some strong line and its cheap too. also buy the leader line like mentioned. you dont need much so buy the smallest spool you can since you do not fish much

hatteras is nice too.. the fishing is better than ocra.. imo... but yes water temp is everything in fishing.. late fall and early to mid spring are the best times to fish for all different kinds of species.. BUT you can still catch more on the OBX than you can most beaches in NC.. we camp out at Rodanthe.. also dont forget to hit piers. sometimes you can catch more on them than on the beach.. we took plain ole bass rods, tied up 2ft of 25-30lb mono leaders and used gotcha plugs.. caught 3 five gallon buckets full of blues in 1 hr.. we slayed them. caught some trout too.

as for your rod. since you do not fish much why dont you buy something cheaper? buy a surf rod 9ft -11ft (9 is a good all around number) i have 12ft rods :D...

and get a bass rod for jigging off a boat or what not.? for the price of the 190 surf combo you are looking at you can have 2-3 decent rods that will add up to that price

What did you use as bait to catch all of those?!

I don't use it much as of now, if possible I would like to fish on the Allegheny river which has some pretty big catfish and what not, so I figured I could use it there too?

I should get it in the mail tomorrow by the way. I checked around and the only thing it says is the capacity is 20 lbs/250 yards.

yeah you can use it catfishing. i use ugly stiks (like the rod you have) for them.. they are bomb proof..

do not go over 20lbs then... in fact i would stick to 12-20lbs.. the lighter line helps for it to be a little less noticable.. now if you were pretty sure you are going to hit some big fish then get 20.. the bad thing about heavier line is that its not a supple and you will notice a huge difference in the stiffness of 20lb test and 12-14lbs test.... i would aim for 14lbs in berkely big game. i use that in the salt and for catfishing.. you can easily reel in 20lb fish with 14lbs big game line.. just a suggestion. i would call your buddy on the coast and ask him what line he would use.

either way you bought a good set up so take care of it...

as for fishing rivers for catfish that 9ft pole maybe too long if you bank fish. keep in mind you can buy another ugly stick for 30-40 bucks at 6.5ft which is perfect for bank fishing. make sure its medium heavy though. those catfish have thick lips

gotcha. the one I just got is medium/heavy too. I have some assorted fishing line that I might be able to use. I have an unopened box of 14lb Ironsilk..not sure if line goes bad though. It is at least 3 years old. I am not opposed to getting the big game though...since I have to go for leader line anyways

its leader line and yes if its 3 yrs old chances are you may have some bad spots.. test it and find out.. a big roll of big game 14lb is only 10 bucks.. go with the fresh line.. a bottle of reel magic is nice for the coast too, spray the line as you are reeling new line on and coat it when you are done.. also you can spray the reel itself to help put a coating on the reel to protect it from the salt spray.. just a suggestion that works for me.. either way clean the reel after fishing salt

sorry i forgot to answer the other question about the blues.. we used gotcha plugs. they are 4-7 bucks a piece so thats why i say to use the leader line. check the line often bc their teeth will fray it.. use about 1.5 to 2ft of leader line bc you will be cutting the lure off and tying it a lot due to the blues teeth...using gotcha plugs is easier to fish with off a pier or boat. you cast, and jig it (bring it up and down) you will figure out what the fish want if you pay attention. its not hard just gotta get out there and fish.

Lol yeah I changed it to leader already...pretty noob move. Gotcha plugs I am not familiar with..I will have to look into them. I will check and see if Dick's sporting goods has the line after work...in addition to the leader line. Should I not get metal leaders? I have one or two of the braided ones where I can put two hooks on them.

nah... just get the thick 2 hooked leaders where you can add a bottom weight and you will be fine. just remember every time you reel in to check all lines. good luck bud.. take pics!

this is what gotcha plugs look like

http://www.seastriker.com/gotcha/

they are very heavy lures.. you can cast them a mile.. but they sink like rocks. they are not ideal for shore fishing (imo) but you may get lucky.. we only use them off of piers and boats

Oh I saw someone with those fishing off the pier lol...we were at the Jolly Roger restaurant if you are familiar with that.

Do you have a picture of the two hooked liters? Because I believe I am quite confused lol

By the way, thanks for the all help thus far! Very prompt responses...and a good time for it!

the leader i am talking about you can find anywhere there is salt fishing, walmarts, kmarts, tackle shops ect.. it looks like the one in this link. it basically allows you to fish the bottom.. we use these for catfishing too.. hint hint.. they are cheap too. you can get a handful of these for a few bucks

http://www.fishing.sh/htmfiles/fishingrigs/ledgerrigs.html

they are pre made.. you just tie it to your fishing line and add a weight at the bottom and there you go.. all done.. easy

not familiar with jolly roger .. i dont go to ocrakoke much.. i do need to take my wife there. she has never been

Ohhh...ok that's what I thought you were talking about lol.

You definitely have to...it is amazing. No chains or franchises! As a result...food isnt cheap. I love the Thai restaurant, called Thai Moon. the flying melon is another winner.

You must be talking about the fort Pitt tunnels! It's a beautiful site indeed...especially at night. It ranked as either the first or second best site in America. Actually I think it. was 2..number one was the painted desert. It's really a great city. You don't know what bar it was? Were you in the south side?

i honestly cant remember. all i remember is we stayed at a 4 star hotel in downtown ( i assume its downtown) and up and to the right a few blocks away were the towers for Pitt. i would assume south maybe?? dunno. first and only time i have been to pittsburg.. i want to go back though.

Do it! It was probably the south side..but there are occasional bars around the towers. Carson street sound familiar? South.side is just bar after bar after bar

honestly i cant remember. i was with my future wife, mom and dad. we were moving my lil bro up to Buffalo ( what a dump sadly) and we walked down a few streets, saw a neat little bar and walked in. i cant remember streets. names of anything do not stick with me for some odd reason. i really hate we didnt get to stay long. i wanted to go see the park at 3 rivers and i wanted to see the stadium too. the only time i saw it was coming out of the mtn and onto a yellow bridge.. it was awesome! i wanted to stop in the middle of the bridge and just look around but obviously i couldnt. i remember looking to my right and seeing a ton of bridges crossing the river and to my left the confluence, stadium and the heinz factory... that factory looks like crap LOL.. i like heinz ketchup though.

Lol the factory got turned in to a big relatively upscale apartment I believe..but yes heinz is way better than, let's say, hunts!

It's hard to say where you could have gone..there are a lot of bars!

By the way I am checking out the local sporting goods.store as soon as I get my reel. I need the big game line and some leaders? I feel like I am forgetting something...??

for surf fishing.

-1oz to 4oz weights pending on current
-hooks mid size to large (1/0 to 4/0) should be plenty
-berkely big game line 14lb (or a quality line at 14lbs) but big game will be cheaper
- 20-25lb line for leader if you are fishing from a boat or pier
- those bottom rigs i showed you. where the hooks and the weight go.
- rod holders
-beer, lots and lots of beer.
- bait
-knife

thats all you need bud.

Alright thanks! I'll let you know what I get.

They have a new factory now..a couple years old I believe.

still near downtown? i remember my dad saying" oh ****, they make my ketchup in that old dump?... I laughed hard.

Their headquarters is downtown...I just found online a majority of their ketchup is made in a factory in (gulp!), Ohio!
