Need some fishing gear help!

I am trying to upload pictures of the hooks I already have from my phone to online via email but it decided it doesnt want to work...stupid android! Well, some went through actually even though they said the messages failed. The hooks I bough many moon ago in virginia. I remember seeing commercials for them on tv...something about scraping the hooks on 2x4's to show how sharp they are?

On a side note...I have no idea how people tie knots with that little fishing line. I hope the heavier test line or leader line is thicker or something so it's easier!

take that old line you have and practice tying knots. you will thank yourself later. knots are extremely important in fishing.. i cannot stress that enough. also always wet your knot before you set it. just use spit or water. those hooks look fine. start small like the left one in your hand. they look like gamakatsu hooks. if so you are fine. damn fine hooks. your hook sizes (as said on the pacakge) should be 1/0's to no more than 4/0's.. i mainly use 1-3/0's unless fishing for much larger fish then i go up to 4-6's

your leader line at 20-25 lbs is a lot thicker than 14lbs... you calling 14lb test line small? i use line (flyfishing) that i can hardly see much less tie.. just takes some practice bud.

It's extremely tough with any fishing line I have learned! I finally figured out the uni knot! By the way the only leaders they had were single wires of like 45 pound test line with a clip at the end

By the way I wasn't calling 14 pound small..they just always illustrate using small cordage

when you head to the beach you will see leaders with two places for hooks (upper and lower) and a clip at the bottom to clip your weight. they are called bottom rigs. not really leaders per se'..

Oh I have three of those already! Can I use the ones I previously mentioned in between the line and bottom rig?

no attach the bottom rig to your line. thats it... use the "leaders" for other types of fishing.. like dragging ground (or carolina rigging) for trout and mainly flounder. or you can use them as another form of bottom fishing.. your choice.

Alright thanks. I think we are going out for flounder now because the blues are real hit or miss..plus we have to drive 2 hours to get to it which no one wants to do

Those hooks are made for plastic worms. Ive used them for other fishing such as live bait , dead shad ,and worms. They worked well.

yeah they are offsets but they work well.. circle hooks work very well for me in the salt. the fish set the hook themselves. esp the ones that grab the bait and run instead of like a bass that inhales and sits or is slow in going with the bait.

"Penn" is short for Pennsylvania, right? Hey I am sure you fished on the Allegheny!

I was checking out these combos on Basspro...any stand out?

Lost track of this thread and just coming back to it nownow.

Hung-Solo offers good advice all the way around.

As far as knots learn a few basic ones..ex, palomar for hooks on light test, snell knot for heavier line, a blood knot for joining lines and a dropper loop in you want to run more than one hook.

As far as fishing the Allegheny? No... I was a fan of the Mon' down near the Elizabeth Bridge.

And yes they still make Ketchup on the "North Side", as well as pickles, vinegar and a bunch of other things. I used to come out of work and could smell what they were making that day.

I definitely plan on learning knots..its just very tough! So far I did uni, blood, and snell

learn palomar (as stated before) and i use a very simple knot called the improved clinch knot a lot. (palomar for heavy line and improved clinch for smaller line and flourocarbon.... just remember before you set all knots, wet it first. it will help it set tighter. practice practice.. i had a small booklet with knots in my pocket all the time when i was young and fishing. wish i still had it.lol ;)

I love my new St.Croix Rod with my Diawa SOL 3000 Reel. A very fast, reactive set-up that is great for medium to larger fish. Its not cheap, about $500 but was worth every penny paid. The combo also works in Salt Water as well as fresh.

damn... you fish tournaments or do you just have that kind of $$ to spend on rods:p... i think the most expensive rod i own is a bass rod and for reel and rod put together its maybe $150-200.. i cant see paying more than that. unless i get paid to fish my wife wont let me :D.... whats funny? i catch more fish on my cheaper rods than i do on the more expensive ones.

The snell is a very useful knot for live bait presentation, but not so much with those hooks pictured above. It's often used with a hook with a canted eye.

I've always found I get better hooksets on a snelled hook. Maybe because the line is in-line witht the shank of the hook.
