Need some help deciding on Becker acquisition plan

I'm surprised no one has suggested the lead pipe in the conservatory yet!

In all honesty I have the 16 and the 17. For the woods tasks I prefer the 16, for the city tasks I prefer the 17. Most times in the city I can use that little bit of a point for a lot of stuff (that a knife isn't necessarily intended to do but it does SO WELL!)

I'd also say if you're getting the 17, and you like how it and the 7 look together (yes it's awesome looking) then get the 7/17 combo. However plan to get a 5 as your next knife.

Haha! ;)

I bit my keyboard.
Figured it was Col. Mustard in the Subforum with the BK-7.

I thought Col Mustard did it with Miss Scarlet in the library......

....but that's for another forum.

I just recently acquired a 10, and I will say I like it better than the 7.....'course, my 7 is undergoing MAJOR reconstructive surgery right now. Get the 17 - it's what you want, right? Get the 7 if you like the aesthetics; it's a perfectly great knife, too. Don't fool yourself into thinking that it's better for wood processing than a 9 or 4, tho. The 12 (as hhmoore stated) is (IMO) the best all rounder in the lineup, the 9 is the best chopper (at least until we see the RBK) - but the 4 has earned a place on my pack a LOT because it is about as versatile a big blade you're ever going to find. It is inevitable, though, that you'll want to try them all. I thought I would be immune to that sort of thinking when I got my 9; like many addicts I probably should've never taken that first hit.....

My best advice is either say "NO" or just get what appeals to you - and be prepared to step onto the slippery slope that leads to a very gentle landing on a big pile of Beckers. You'll be in good company.

If it were me, id get the 17, a 10 or 12, and the 9. The 9 is the most used Becker I have by far, and I do think everyone needs one. It's just amazing how it does big things so well, and yet be so capable with the small things as well.

That said, do what you want, as any of them will be great :).

Chamleonbear's suggestion of a 7/17 combo makes the most sense to me at the moment. I'm sure the 9,10,5,12 and 16 are great blades, but right now I'm trying to cover as many bases as I can for practical reasons without taking on too much gear. I may get a Kukri (including the Becker one about to come out) or a good axe instead of a 9. I will be watching updates on that Becker Kukri closely.

I got the 9 for the start follow by 14 and next in line is the 16.

On the side line is a 3 in the car boot for emergency.

For me the 9 is actually used very similarly to a hatchet. Its small enough I can put it on my belt ( modded the sheath to allow me to sit down with it on, which helped immensely with this) and keep it there for a whole evening camping, good enough at chopping to chop anything up to calf sized or so without too much drama, and splits that same sized wood down to tiny sized wood with ease. And to be honest, I almost never chop with my 9 anymore, its just too much work. My folding saw does all that I need in the cutting department, and the BK9 splits up the stuff that needs splitting :).

What I'm trying to say is that if you're thinking that the 9 is like an axe... you would be severely disappointed. But what makes the 9 special in my mind is that it "can" do large sized tasks like that, but it can still make my tent pegs, and my feathersticks without feeling like I'm handling a battleaxe.

Anyway, that's just my two cents :).

And the Kukri should be great as well and should easily out chop the 9.

I've been looking to get my first Becker for a while after first being drawn to the BK2. After much research, I scratched the 2 found 7,9,10 and 17 to be models I want. I want to start out with a good single option blade and was ready to get the 7, until I started looking at the 10. I really can't decide between these two, because the 9 and the 17 seem a perfect pair where as the 17 and the 10 or a 7 and 9 are much less compelling combo's.

I know that the 17 will be the second Becker I buy and I may scratch the 9 in favor of the Becker Kukri.

So I'm totally torn between the 7 and the 10. I like the blade shape better on the 7, but I think the 10 is a better size. Whichever one I get, I probably won't get the other, at least not for a very long time.

Then I will look to get a 17 and either the 9 or the Kukri. Trying to make it all fit and come up with the best three blade setup based on these choices. Thanks!

Col Mustard,

How do your expect to use your knives -- what for, I mean? I went through a series of scenarios not so a long ago as I acquired all the Beckers I thought I needed; so maybe it doesn't matter what you intend if you are like the others here & me. ;) I just yesterday ordered a BK3 because I had an old air conditioner to disassemble far enough to put in the trash. This evening while preparing dinner for my wife (she is a semi-invalid and can no longer cook) I was not finding the right knife for something and thought maybe I needed a BK5 after all. I don't camp but I do cook. And maybe I didn't make the right selection when I opted for a BK17 instead of the 16 or 15, but being a former Marine, as someone observed I do like pointy knives.

If you will be acquiring as complete a Becker kit for your goal as I did (and am apparently still doing) for mine, you won't be disappointed in buying a BK10, 12, or 7 next. Maybe as someone suggested the 12 being half way between the 10 and 7 would be the best choice. You might need some help figuring out where to buy one; there is only one seller that handles the 12. I could look it up but I'm sure the old timers know that off the top of their heads.

The 7 and the 10 are nearly an impossible choice and I feel like either way I'll wish I got the other one. Yes, I am partial to clip-points at least right now with my relatively small amount of blades.

10 compared to 7 is yes difficult as they are two larger knives
If you look at the 7 as a shorter 9, then compare the 10 to the 9 or 4 and it becomes easier as they are choppers more than large knives
So comparing 10 to 9 or 4 is not a repetition of knife function

Then comparing the 10 to the tweeners is also difficult
The 10 to the 16 are similar
I went to the small knives, and have a 24 coming
Again comparing the 10 to the 24 in not a repetition of knife function

Good luck

Bk10 is 15 bucks cheaper than the 7 right now and closer to what I'm willing to pay so looks like the 10 is what I'm getting!!! LOL

I love it when pricing makes the decision for you :).

In fact, thats exactly what I just did. I'd been hankering for a tweener since they came out, and then the BK15 went down to $42, and I decided to get that one first :).

Why not? It's a great knife.

Agreed. Personally, if I was choosing between the 7 and the 10, id get just the 12 and call it good. I just have a thing for drop points I guess :/. The 12 is pricier, of course, but one 12 is cheaper than a 10 and a 7 :).

But to each his own I guess, the 10 should be great for you :).

The main reason for not wanting a 12 is the price. I'm pretty sure I want to swap out the handles and get a kydex sheeth. It's a good looking knife, even without the clip-point :). But since I have yet to even own a Becker I didn't consider it. Beside you guys are supposed to help me, not confuse me more by adding more choices.
