Need some help deciding on Becker acquisition plan

Welcome, Col Mustard, to the Becker forum. This is a great place to learn and full of awesome people.

I would say get the BK-10 over the BK-7 hands down.

I love the BK-10 and as most everyone here already knows, I hate the 7. For real, I just can't stand it. Not that it is not a great knife for what it was designed for, but for my needs as a woods knife, there are way better options within the Becker lineup for me to choose from.

But that is in no way everyones opinion, just mine. haha. So if you like the 7 better, then go for it.

Now all that being said, Everyone also knows that I prefer the BK-12 over the BK-10 and BK-2, and of course way better than the 7.

Yes the BK-12 cost more but I will tell you after owning 3 of them that they are worth every penny. If you want to spend the extra money, get the 12, you will not regret it.

But the BK-10 is still a great option, especially since it is your first Becker. Your Idea to spend that extra money on upgrades to the sheath and handles for what ever knife you get is a great idea.

In my opinion if you are wanting something larger than the 10 or 12, go straight to the 9 and skip the 7.

The Bk-11 and BK-16 are my two most used knives. I have carried a BK-11 everyday for about 3 years now and it does everything I need it to.
The BK-16 is a fantastic woods knife and I have even skinned and processed a couple dear with it with no problem.

So the option that many have suggested to get a large and a small knife is a very wise one.

The BK-11/14 or BK-16/17 paired with the BK-9 or even the BK-4 would do everything you need to do. Just an option.

On a side note, I believe the new Becker Kukri paired with the BK-16 is going be just awesome!

Good luck with your decision and know that whichever Becker you do decide on will be a great knife and serve you well.

One of the reasons I wanted the 7 was because it was Ethan's update to the 7 inch Kabar which I have. Same reason I want the 10, Ethan's update to the AFSK, which I also have. If that's makes any sense.

Hmm. If you want to upgrade both your Kabar and AFSK in order to get something beefier and more durable than . . . you need both the BK10 and BK7 don't you? Frankly there is no wrong choice. You want both and intend to get both, can't afford both now; so pick one. You won't be unhappy with either one. If I were you I'd get the 10 and start saving up for the 7. The 12 would be a good choice if you were only going to have one knife forever, but I doubt that is the case. I took my 10 on a hike this morning & will probably post some photos in a couple of days. I like the 7 as well but holding them both, the 7 seems much more the combat knife, more aggressive. The 10 is no pushover but maybe more a defensive knife and not as intimidating to look at. Get the 10.

Yeah, I'm going to get the 10. $15 bucks cheaper and more people seem to like it over the 7. The 12 looks cool but I'm not sure it's so much better than the 10 to be almost double the price.

I started with the 10, then got the 14. (And then got a 2nd 10 from Uncle E 'cause the first one had an... issue). I'm stuck there for now, but will own a lot more. Great knives, from a great company, designed by a great person. You honestly can't go wrong with any of them.

The one thing I did like the 10 over the 7 was I felt reasonably assured I could spend the money of a really good sheath with a ferro rod and have a pretty good all-around survival knife.

Beside you guys are supposed to help me, not confuse me more by adding more choices.
We did help. You had two choices, we narrowed it down to one. Can't help it that it wasn't one of your original...at least it was sort of still a Becker.
In all seriousness, though, enjoy your 10. It's never interested me; but your money, your knife. If you like it, that's all that matters. One of these days, I might see one on the exchange and grab it. That's how I got my 2. It'll probably sit right next to the 2, as well. Unused, because we just didn't click. One day, I'll get over the It's Mine thing and sell some of the knives that are just sitting around taking space. I'm not actively dying, moving out of state, or anything else that would spur such an act, though; so it probably won't be anytime soon.
What? Dex has three 12s? <grumbles><cursing> I only have two. I did almost buy a third not too long ago; but I went for an Infi-du instead.

I agree with Mr.Becker. 11, 16, and 9. The 11 is tough as nails for its size, plus it even has a wire breaker! Great for lashin to a pole and grabbling apples. You could piggy back the 16 and 9, for a large/small combo. (11 was my gateway becker knife..) Oh, btw, look at the 2 and 3!

Dexwithers,

If you don't mind I'd be interested in why you bought 3. I just recently got my knives set up with Skystorm sheaths and Tommythewho handles, and then had second thoughts about using them. Did I really want to "use" them and risk messing them up? Maybe I just need to put them on a shelf and "look" at them. But I got over that thinking that if I ding one up, since all the ones I really like are still in production and likely to be in production for a long time, I can just buy another. But in the case of the 12, Doug Ritter probably doesn't have the mighty backing that Ethan Becker has and might give it up one day. Maybe it would be prudent to buy a couple more while he is still making them. [Maybe this should be a new thread but how many on this forum could possibly have 3 BK12s?????] What do you think?

Well Lawrence, I got my first one and it's my main user. I have put it to the test for sure. It has never failed me and was kinda hard on it in the beginning. That one has been stripped and stuff but the 12 doesn't really need any major mods to be perfect. Just squared about and inch of the spine for my ferro rod. It's really my go to knife.

I usually like to have a duplicate, especially of the knives I like so If something does happen to it, I don't have to wait for a new one. But the second knife I keep pretty much stock and don't use much. Maybe just a little light cutting here and there. That way I have a good example to use for making sheaths.

So my dad was looking at all my knifes one day and really liked that one so I ended up giving it to him and had to by a third one to replace it.
So I only have 2 right now. But I am on the look out for a used one so I can de-ramp it and add a choil. haha

And I know what you mean about not wanting to mess them up when they are new. Especially if they are upgraded. Just put a scratch on it right away, then you won't really care. haha

I think they will be made for a while but not forever. I believe they just do small runs at a time. Last I checked, they were around only 1000 produced. May be more by now. They are all serial numbered which is really cool. Right now I have numbers 186 and 519 (my kids birthday).

Pfffft - ask him how many BK16s he has.

Not enough................. that's for sure...................... Unless you think 9 is enough. haha

My kids birthday is 5-20. My 12 says "Rowen 490" Is the 490 the serial number? I wondered what that meant.

I was kind of leaning towards the 10, but the fact is I don't have a Bowie knife and the 7 is pretty cool one.

I took a good while deciding, but the all-around usefulness of the BK10 sold it to me. Sort of like a BK2 but thinner and more utilitarian IMHO. Not my only Becker anymore and not my last!

Cheers, Ed
edh3007 - because 30.06 was taken!
