I have the Remora, and I use it as my EDC bag when I'm in town. It works for me because I can't yet get a CCW permit (#%@$% California). As a CCW platform, you'd have to be carrying a very small pistol in order to adequately hide it in this bag, and if you're going that small you might as well carry on your person (which is where it's supposed to be anyway).
My big complaint with the remora is there's no good way to carry a water bottle on it. I can add a rolypolly in a pinch, but that would make the bag awkward, I think.
For road trips when I want to carry a lot of stuff (including a pistol, when I'm outside of California), I have a Maxpedition Colossus versipack. This is my "road tripping" bag. I added rollypollys to either side of the bag for additional carrying capacity, including a 1 liter waterbottle if necessary. The colossus can carry all my "away from home gear" plus a pair of binoculars or a digital SLR (but not both). It gets heavy when it's fully loaded, but I carried the thing on a short (~3 mile) hike in the desert recently and it worked out ok.
