Need some input, home shop bench

The only thing i'd really strongly suggest is adding some sheer panels. a 2x6, or better- a 12 inch wide plywood strip (anything - even 1/4 inch thick will do) screwed along the front side until you get your shelving and drawers set up will help prevent torsion twisting stresses from ...twisting things :)

Excellent idea:thumbup: I'll probably run one along the backside.

BTW, can anyone tell me what the metal plate is on the corner of Pirtle's bench?? Heat plate? Something to do with bluing or coloring metal? I see it's hooked up to some type of machine. I should probably know what it is, but I can't recall seeing anything quite like it:o

It is an electro-magnetic chuck. Cool idea

Yup, that's what it is. Thanks

I set it about 1/16" below the rest of the work surface so when I work on the bench with large projects it doesn't get in the way.

I have a number of jigs a stick to it and then also use it for working flats right off of the face.

My knife finishing clamp is pictured below.

Looks like you are off to a good start on the work bench. I did a top once from 2x6's but as a woodworker also I need something that allows me to easily slide a large project around which is why I like a one piece surface. Down the road if you want it would be real easy to screw down OSB to what you have there if you decide you want a very flat top.

I am but a beginner but would like to point out what I learned on my last knife... grinding the blank down on a 6" wheel left the bench top smoking. Those sparks are hot and like to burn.

If you will be grinding on your table, fire proof it where the sparks go... and don't let them get into the dust.

I'd suggest a little sheet metal put under the grinder... with it on a 12-18 inch tabletop overhang with no shelving under it... hope this helps.

That looks good:thumbup: If I wasn't planning on leaving one side of the bench open for storage for taller items I would do it exactly like that. I like how it has a nice clean, finished look.

Got the rest of the frame finished tonight and the top attached. Thought I had the 2x4 on the wall installed just right, but need to lower it by just about 3/16 of an inch. I was off a touch and the rear legs don't touch the floor. Should be an easy fix. So far I'm very pleased with how it's turning out. No pics tonight, I worked a full 11 hour shifrt and then spent the night working on the bench and now it's late and I'm WHOOPED!:D

Also, Borg...I like the idea of some sheet metal on the tabletop where the grinder will sit:thumbup:

Ok, back in the garage this morning anf afternoon before the big game.(Very entertaining game this year BTW:thumbup:) Anyway, I made some more good progress on the bench. It's sheared up and feeling very solid. I should be ready to make my final mount onto the wall tomorrow or Tuesday.

Still open to suggestions or tips for this stage of the game. Thanks all!

Well, looks like I might be too busy to browse the forums for a while!!:D I finished up the bench for the most part this afternoon. There are still some odds and ends that need to be finished up, but essentially the way it's going to be.

Thanks for all of the ideas and input:thumbup: As usual, BF is the best place to go on the web for friendly advice. I gotta run now, I think there's an old cleaver in the garage that needs sharpening and a new handle!!:D
