Need some new knives so I can go camping!

fixed- Koster bushmaster, Bark river Bravo 1

You are kidding, right? There is no more camping. Camping was a phenomena done when you could find a place where you were at least 25 miles from the closest human and public lands where camping was legal abounded and you walked in. Most of those places had disappeared for many reasons by the 1970s. Today there are no places in the mainland US where you are more than 5 miles from the closes human and even those are very rare. These days "camping" is usually done from a sleeper cab in a pickup truck parked 15 feet away from the next guy on his families 'camping' trip with both using propane stoves for cooking, or only pre cut wood purchased from an on site vendor. Sure, there are still 300 acre privately owned parks where you can pay $50 for the privilege of walking 300 yards and pitching a tent, but trust me, a) you ain't the only one using it this weekend, and b) the cheapest knife you can find will work just fine as both Kmart and Walmart are less than an hour away if you need another one. Now if you come back saying you own 14,000 acres in Oregon and you mean to this on your own land and have never actually been in there before, then you might need a real knife and a good GPS, but if not, please...

Lots of great tenting spots in BC! (edit to add: dekz already beat me to i!)

For your price range, i hate to say it, but a cold stell master hunter would be my choice for the fixed blade, i can thing of a dozen other knives but they all cost more. The master hunter, especially if you can get one in carbon V is great.

I didn't know any Bark Rivers would be in this price range. Actually I'm still not sure, where are my fellow Canadians ordering their Bark Rivers from?

You might want to check out Ka-Bar for the fixed blade:

Ka-Bar Short Heavy Bowie: under $50 shipped on eBay
Ka-Bar Short, Black, Plain Edge: under $55 shipped on eBay

For the folders, maybe:
Spyderco Tenacious, Native VG-10 or S30V
The Boker looks nice

I think any combination of these will meet your criteria and keep you within your budget.

And in regards to superc's post, don't worry about it. Whether he's a life-long troll or if he's just temporarily trolling, it's not welcome here.

I forgot about the price range :foot:

I was just trying to think of modern fixed blades.

Well I guess I better sell all my gear or buy 14000 acres in Oregon.

I say for the budget set, look at Kabar for the fixed, and for the folder. The Kabar Mule gets a lot of favorable comments.

What does everyone think of the CRKT Kommer Bez Tine? It's a little small at 3.25" but it sure looks comfy!

I know I'm kind of breaking my own rule, it's got some wood on the handle, but I think it's a great looking knife.

Okay, mea culpa. I had made an obviously unwarranted assumption that he was in the lower 48 states of the US. Forgot all about the possibility he was in a country that still had real survival camping where the quality of the knife is important. I apologize.

I want something beefy/chunky when I'm out in the woods. Something really comfortable so it doesn't hurt my hand if I do a lot of heavy duty cutting.

I'd just get a good SAK (you might add a Mora, but I don't have any fixed blades - and I camp a lot) and spend the rest of the dough on beer and quality beef jerky. YMMV

Your apology is useless as stated...your characterization of the lower 48 U.S. states is so far from the truth as to be useless drivel...that's all the comment it deserves. :thumbdn:

If you could spend a little extra, you may want to look at the Fallkniven f1. Another thing is try to give traditional knives a chance, they are great knives.

SUPER C - "...Today there are no places in the mainland US where you are more than 5 miles from the closes human and even those are very rare."

Super C, come on out to Idaho and I can take you to quite a few places that are very remote camping spots, at least 20 miles from "anywhere." Also the same in Montana, and Wyoming, where I've done a fair amount of hunting and boonie bustin'. :)

Certainly "back east," or "down south," it's difficult to find a good remote camping spot, but not out here.

The appropriately sized RAT or Ranger for the fixed, and a One-handed Trekker SAK for the folder.

BC is huge and beautiful and i'll be moving there soon!

And you can pretty much include all the other other provinces in Canada as having plenty of isolated tenting spots,
well except maybe PEI (because its so small in all , but it is pretty though).
I'm in Newfoundland on the Avalon peninsula, all i have to do is drive away from St.John's for 15-45 minutes,
stop the car and walk off the TransCanada into the woods to camp and get far enough away from people.

Even in the U.S there should be lots of tenting spots, especially out west.

Under 50$ each?
No natural handle materials?
Fixed Blades-Mora Triflex Craftsman, or Mora 2000, or Buck Vanguard or 119.
Locking folder-Victorinox Outrider/Rucksak/OH Trekker.

If i was starting over and outfitting from scratch i'd be well served by the Triflex, the Outrider and a 14 inch Fiskars hatchet.
:)

Man, what's your problem? Just because you're stuck in some God-forsaken city doesn't mean that that's all there is...Grow up and travel. You'll be surprised at what's still pristine in "the lower 48 states of the US". I've already told you that I know for a fact it's there.

Besides, this thread isn't about your opinions  on camping, wilderness, or survival. It's about Dekz's questions on a knife. Either offer something constructive or don't post at all. If you feel you must pontificate on your perceived drivel, take it to W&C or W&SS...or better yet, take it to another web site...

Mora 2000, Buck 119, swiss army farmer.
Maybe a cold steel trailhawk too. You would be right at 100.00 for all if you shopped around, and would have a perfect woods combo, EVEN IF YOU HAD 14000 ACRES IN OREGON.

Hmm, seriously man, why no more traditional handle materials. For $59 (US) don't know about Canadia, you can get one helluva camping combo, a Buck 119 and a Buck 110.
But, if you're a die-hard no trad kinda guy, then I think Buck makes the 110 with a plastic handle, maybe called the Bucklite.
As for fixed- the 119 has a phenolic handle, maybe it will appeal to you. There are also KaBar Marines for 50, short, heavy Bowies for 36, Moras for 10-30, Old Hickories for less than that, CRKTs, the GLOCK knife.
Also, I'm gonna stick my neck out and say to look at Cold Steel. They have their new Pocket Bushman for $30. It's a big folder, and has yet to be proven. For fixed, they also have the Canadian bush knife/Roach Belly/Finn Bear/Finn Wolf, and also the Western and Long hunters. There are also their Combat Classics, peace keepers, OSS, etc.
A Byrd Cara Cara might also work for you.
