Why not start with a hacksaw?

The tanks are really thin and will cut fast.

If you have a hard abrasive cutoff wheel on a disc ( angle) grinder or a bench grider that will work too.

( standard safety warning, take out the valve & flush out the gas & air with compressed air or water, or fill with a non flammable gas such as c02, nitrogen, argon welding mix....)

it isnt the cut off that is a problem. i hve a 4 1/2" angle grinder... it is the openings that are a problem. two for doors and then one for the burner. and i can possibly cut the doors... but the burner will be hard.... casue it is small and circullar. any ideas? and i dont have a drill press. (i have a freind with a gravity feed bandsaw.
thanks

mark out where you want your hole to be and get a smaller cutting wheel for your grinder and undercut your hole and then go back with the grinder and clean up as much as you can and then clean the rest with a half round file. mine was cut with a torch but i cleaned it up and shimmed it up with a half round file. try that and see if that does the trick. post pics of it and your progress on it.

Well...
this is what i was planning on doing....
i planning on doing what i could with what i had incuding my angle grinder and other implements... but hey... if there was a torch in the area.....
that was the hope
i will post pics!

HAHA
i am building TWO forges at the moment...
got all that kaowool... and the burner (from darren)
so it will work on both
heYA!

How about a jig saw with an adjustable speed, so you don't burn the blade. Worked for me on a propane tank.

well this is REALLLLLY thick
my guess is 1/4-1/2" thick solid steel
plus... i dont have a jig saw...
but if i did.. that would be nice
thanks

Not a very helpful reply and don't want to sound dumb but, just make sure it's empty, rinse it out thouroghly and the top is off first. Maybe you could find someone with a plasma cutter for really accurate cuts. I saw a story about that recently but could only find this one.

Elderly Man Killed In Explosion Tuesday, January 16, 2007 8:45:41 PM

An elderly man is dead after an explosion at his home in Orange County.
Sky 13 flew over the scene Tuesday on 41st Street.
Investigators say the victim was cutting or welding on a five gallon drum using a propane torch. At some point, the tank exploded.
Deputies and firefighters rushed to the home, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene. Some nearby were evacuated as a precaution.
"Since we didn't know what we were dealing with we took the precautions of evacuating the adjacent houses and make sure we kept everybody out until we had everything under control," Gregory Pines said.
No one else was injured.
Right now, investigators say the whole thing appears to be a tragic accident.

Oops! I didn't read enough!

Take it to someone who has a torch and just cut/burn the hole for the burner. Then weld in a pipe sleeve that the burner will slide in and out of. The edges of the burned hole can be cleaned up with a round file or a cylindrical grinding attachment on a drill. A sabre saw with a good metal cutting blade (run at a lower cutting speed) will cut most anything. Just drill holes at the corners of the door cutouts and saw from one to the other.

sounds like a plan...
i was just trying to FIND someone wiht a torch.

and i opened the valves on the top of th tank. does this mean that it is empty? or should i take more precations before drilling and cutting?

thanks

I agree about making sure there is no pressure in the tank but oxygen is NOT flammable remember oxygen is in the air that we breath if it was flammable we would have BIG problems. Everyone think back to the fire triangle Fuel, Heat, and Oxygen take any away and no fire.
