Need some tactical advice

Also, since this came from their homepage I'm sure he could probably call them and ask how much it'd be to have something like this engraved on his knife. I know they do group buys, too, if his team also wanted one.

I'm in the field a lot, Tucson-Ajo, and I carry a DPX HEST all the time. Since I own the company I'll carry anything I want:eek:

Carry a knife for awhile. He needs to get used to always having one with him. Like part of him , a tool he knows and trusts. This is most important. I've had a few not so expensive knives for many years who worked well because I knew them trusted them and felt like part of my hand . MUddy, bloody, dirty and dull. A knife you know, can sharpen and will reach for will required will fail you.
Peace ..but be prepared

Hands down the Emerson horseman. $200 give or take a few bucks. Carries really well. Perfect size. Not too big, not small

I don't think I would recommend an OTF for many things but for a backup weapon for a non knife person I think you could do a lot worse. Plus it has a high cool and gadget factor that he will enjoy carrying and showing his buddies plus he's one of the few that can carry one without issues.

The new Hogue OTF (of gun grip fame) comes in a tanto and looks nice.

I think you're looking for something with excellent traction, easy to operate with gloves, wet hands, dirt and blood, quick to flick open, with reliable and strong locking mechanism, tough blade and sturdy tip. Cold Steel Tanto Voyager

All for 1/3rd of an Emerson's price, or 1/4 of a Protech's. Think how easily it could be lost, misplaced, dropped in a chase or "borrowed" by some gang bouncer or door security personnel. If Vin Diesel chooses it it must be nice, right?

Cold Steel Tanto Recon is a nice alternative too.

If you want to get him something for the purposes of possibly defending his life with IMO a waved Emerson is the way to go. Maybe a waved 7a, the drop point would make it a little more friendly for EDC tasks while retaining the quality/quick deployment of an Emerson. Take a look at waved Karambits also.

I seriously doubt his agency provides knife fighting training. The OP should ask his brother what he will ACTUALLY use the knife for, then choose accordingly.

Agreed!!

Your brother doesn't sound like a "knife guy", so I wouldn't spend a whole lot of money on a "tactical" knife. I'm retired now, but was on a CERT team for a while. We all carried relatively inexpensive, simple knives like Griptilians or various Spydercos. Keep in mind that 99% (or more) of his knife use will be for "non-tactical" purposes. A sharp Griptilian or PM2 will do the job nicely.

Carrying a fixed is controversial on his team. Thats why the folding. After showing him all the suggestions, hes asked for the protech. Thanks for all yalls help!

If he ever loses the Protech, the CS Recon 1 is an excellent all around carry.

If he changes his mind on the tanto tip I'd suggest the spyderco manix 2 with black blade. Multiple steel options but s30v would suit his needs fine, cage ball lock won't fail, blade shape/grind is designed for slicing. And depending on the steel you choose you can find them for as low as 100 bucks so you could throw in a 2nd option as well.

For all the replies that ask what he will actually use it for, hes only going to use it in a last ditch self defense. Not edc, just a weapon.

Cold Steel Hold Out II. I have 2 of them and 2 HO IIIs and never feel under armed, even with the smaller version. I think your bro will really appreciate the ease of carry, relatively light weight and out and out overall strength of the knife and reliability of the lock. As you can tell from it's name this is no whittlin' blade. It's very handy having a straight profile, this easily fits in most any place it can be carried I really think this will be very important for him. If you do go with it it's highly recommended to have the clip tension very properly adjusted because it will come too tight, that's just how it is. Handle is grippy, blade is FFG and has a wicked distal taper. Ouch.

If he is doing field work, and wearing a tac vest then get a Kabar TDI and add that to the MOLLE or inside the vest pocket. Then I would add a thin light folder (like a spyderco military) clipped weak side pocket. If he is doing more officer/investigative work then start with a folder and see where that takes him.
