Hey everyone, a little background really quick. I've been collecting knives for about 6 years now and I've been using bladeforums almost as long. I've been able to get most of the answers to my past questions by coming here and just reading the numerous posts by other users but now comes the time where I have to make my first post here.
I'm currently in AIT at Fort Sam Houston. I've been away from any source of technology for a while so I'm not really "up to date" on my knife knowledge. While I'm here, I'm allowed to have a knife on me but it must be under 3'' long. I have a few ideas of what I want in my head but for now I wanna hear what anybody has to say. I'll appreciate any help

Requirements:
Folding (lockback, frame lock, or linerlock)
Under $100
3" or shorter
AO knives are fine, no auto's

Kershaw or Spyderco are in that price range and size. Check out the exchange here for deals.

A Spyderco Dragonfly and a SAK of your choice will keep you under 100 bucks and do everything you need in a garrison/ training setting.
I got by fine with a Tinker when I served.

Good luck with your schooling!!!

I love my ZT900. Ball bearing titanium Framelock flipper. Short blade, lots of belly.

I was already thinking of the dragonfly in vg10 (along with the buck small vantage w/ s30v, the minigriptillian, and the mini presidio.) I think I might go with the dragonfly. Thank you for the feedback!

There are just too many in that general range for me to come up with something specific. But in researching, if you find something that you like more than others that just happens to be a hair over 3", you could always have it ground down a bit by one of the pimp artists on the forum.

For example, I've been very enamored by a new Kizer. Blade measures out at around 3-1/8. The knife is just so amazingly smooth and pretty, that I would simply hate leaving it behind because of a legality of that fraction. Would rather have the spine knocked down a bit than do without. Pretty sure that .125" would not affect function appreciably. There are so many amazing blades that ring in just over that 3" mark. So maybe keep some options open to "around" 3".

What about a small bucklite Max ? They only cost 20$ use a perfectly serviceable edc steel ( I always recommend to bucklite Max in any size, because I love them and they're a good very affordable dirt simple edc option )
If you can except a non locking blade the case sodbuster Jr in v is also an excellent option
And so is the opined which does lock, just not using one of the listed mechanisms.

So many choices. Any of the mini Benchmades a would be great if you can find one in your budget (maybe used or on sale). Probably last forever. Add $25 or so and you can buy one new.
My next thought was a Spyderco Delica 4 with the wave feature for quick deployment. It's $65, simple design, hardy, decent VG10 and no nonsense.

Good luck.

I'll second the ZT 0900, designed by Les George. Outstanding little knife! Unfortunately, it's double the price point you're looking for.

H&K mini axis would be another great choice. Stout little fella, for sure.

Dragonfly is an awesome knife, but I'd go with the ZDP-189 version for a little more as its worlds better than VG10 for edge retention. Check out the Chaparral if you want something a little bigger and classier. Native5 LW is a great suggestion as well and an absolute workhorse of a knife.
