Kanahada softens/darkens the brightness of the blade surface, and allows the hamon to be more visible in comparison. It is used when the blade surface is very bright, and thus the hamon is hard to discern.
Shashikomi is used to enhance the hamon, while not changing the ji all that much. Shashikomi is used for very complex and delicate hamons. It tends to whiten the hamon, but does not darken the shinogi-ji.
