Needing A Good Folder - S30V / ~$150

I have a spyderco military that I like pretty well, bought it for $80 shipped. I also really like the Benchmade Dejavoo ($110 or so), but did not care for the mini.

The Buck Vantage Pro is probably the lowest cost S30V folder out there. It's a great flipper too.

If you can find one, a Buck Mayo is also a great choice. Titanium framelock, Bos heat treat, very elegant design.

I'm finally looking to finally get a nice folder (around a 3+ inch blade). I really like the specs on S30V steel (not to mention Chris Reeve uses it..). I want to pay $150 (or less).

I'm seriously considering a Benchmade 745 Mini-Dejavaoo. It meets all the criteria, and seems like a good blade. I also like that it has G10 scales. And, I can get one for around $100...

Anything else I should seriously consider in this price range?

Thanks in advance!

I'm not going to deter you from buying a Mini Dejavoo, since it really is by far my favorite BM knife, but you need to realize that it has a pathetic liner lock. It's weak and needs a little tweaking that some people dont think they should be doing on a 100 dollar knife (myself included). Other then that its a phenomenal light edc knife and makes a great dress knife with its smooth, sculpted G10 scales and beautiful blade shape.

As for other good choices with S30V, I would have to definitly recommend any of the Spyderco Sages. Great quality and a solid heat treated S30V steel.

If you're looking for a nice looking, gentlemans knife then I would have to say go with the 745. If you are looking for a more rugged folder than go with the Sage 2.

Kershaw Blur in S30V. 3 3/8" blade, T6 aluminum scales with Trac-Tec inserts, awesome coating on the clip, relatively light for the size (about 4 oz.) and made in the U.S. all for around $80-$90. Its also a Speedsafe knife if you like A.O. blades. Its very fast and works great even as a manual folder if you remove the torsion bar. Its my personal favorite sub $100 production knife. Deffinately worth checking out even if you ultimately don't buy one.

lw cheyenne at 3.2 or blackfoot at 3, can be had for around $100 and are smooth as hell...

it seems impossible to seriously dull lone wolf's s30v blades...

Wow, great suggestions so far. With the suggestion of the Spyderco Sage 2 - using the Chris Reeve frame-lock, I'm now leaning toward that one. It's the closest I'll probably ever get to a Sebenza...

The only issue I kind-of have with the Sage 2 is the clip. Is the wire clip sturdy enough for this chunky knife??

Best clip on any knife IMHO. I doubt I'll ever sell my Sage2 but the Sage1 is still my favorite. If you try one and don't like it they seem to sell pretty quickly on the second hand market.

I have a BM 745 in my pocket right now. It's a great Lum design with a thin, almost full flat grind that cuts very well. I've had 2 and neither had lockup issues. If it appeals to you get one.

But I also really like my Paramilitary 2 which is also in your price range. It's just a little bigger and athough I'm fine with the lock on the 745, I think the compression lock on the Para gives a greater measure of security.

I would get a Para2 for around $100
You'll be hard pressed to find a better knife that's made in the USA at this price point.

I agree about avoiding the Mini-Dejavoo. I've handled several, and although only a couple didn't lock up as tightly as they should (very likely just needed the pivot adjusted), all of them were too easy to disengage. Neat knife, but the linerlock could be better.

However, if the Mini Dejavoo were to be used for opening letters, packages, etc., it would most likey do just fine.

I'll through in a vote for the BM 940. With a little shopping around you can find one new for your budget, maybe a smidge less.

Best,

Totally agree that the Para 2 is probably the best choice at around the $100 range. Only problem is that it is nearly impossible to find one right now. Maybe after a couple months we'll be able to see them in stock more frequently. Hopefully.

Checkout the BM 790 Subrosa - MSRP $240. I got mine locally for $155 + s/t. It's assisted opening - Ti-framelock/S30V. I bought a LN BM 630 Skirmish at a recent gunshow for $140 - so the secondary market is another choice, as well - especially like the discontinued BM's. I also bought a new old stock BM 610/615 Rukus/Mini-Rukus and 635 Mini Skirmish in the $150 range from a local dealer - all discontinued and sold at a discount to help make room for new stock - it pays to look around locally!

Now, if you want a moose - a well made moose - and can find $189 shipped - try K-guy here on B-F 'for sale' - I got a new ZT-301 from him this summer - impressive knife - and service. Good luck.

The Sage 2 may come off as chunky in photos but it's really a sports car and is light weight by normal standards.

They're easy to find. Even Home Depot sells them. The problem is the cheapest I've seen them is $189.

But where can you find one for $100? You may be able to find one on Ebay for a lot more or wait for a couple of months until Spyderco makes another run. It's not really available right now.

Easily the best value going for a folder right now. You can find a little better(not much) knife if you are willing to spend $150 though.
