I have people I consider friends on the JD that let me know when someone from over there pops up here. I appreciate their time and willingness to alert me on potential problems with some people. I've been able to curb several issues by preemptively sending PMs to the people in question.
I already asked Spark about that. He would need to possibly create an all new usergroup for mods, and all the technical issues that come with it. He can do it, if needed. The bottom line is if someone needs to be babysat to that extent, they don't need to be here period. I agree, he is his own worst enemy.
He isn't operating without impunity, he just hasn't crapped the bed the way he has in other places. You are painting things with a very broad brush. We communicate with friends that are mods and members on other forums, but every place has their own rules. What is allowed here is not on other forums, and vice versa. People simply need to take a little personal responsibility and learn how to use the forums and even the internet to search before sending money to a stranger. We aren't going to babysit people though, that would basically mean that the Exchange needs to be closed because people cannot be entrusted with their own safety. If we went around banning people for what they did in other places, it would totally change the spirit of the community here. We're talking Minority Report Pre-Crime Division stuff. I think we are doing a good job keeping the moderation low in the Exchange and people being mostly honest. Can we improve? Of course, we all can.I am uncomfortable with the fact that he gets to operate with impunity here on Bladeforums after being banned from both the USN and JD. I know there's little inter-forum communication but this is a small community whose ability to police itself is hindered by the "he didn't do anything wrong here yet" mentality.
If he doesn't learn he will be gone. Transactions need to be handled according to the rules. Again, no way for us to see every single sales thread and we do what we can. Luckily, the people that really care report things that are problematic and that allows us to intervene. I urge people to report threads when they look shady or violate several rules, or if they see a returning banned member or a thief that we need to look into. He's got 4 threads on him here in the GB&U and 3 of them are not good. There was that big one about how he shipped a knife to Canada in an envelope with out insurance and lied on the customs form but then wanted help from BFC. I can't remember how that one worked out exactly but however it did it was from pressure through GB&U, much like this current situation. He has not learned a thing.
The problem with having him around is that noobs and other folks who don't know to look here before dealing with him will have no idea who they are dealing with. But hey, I'm safe, he was on my block list long ago.
You nailed it again. People need to do research, doesn't matter how long they have been in the game. New people need to be especially cautious of "deals" and "bargains". How many threads do we see "I bought this knife, is it real?" It seems that carelessness cannot be prevented in some folks no matter you post regarding authorized dealers, not worry about saving $2 on a shady deal, etc.I knew this would be here today, I kinda watched this all go down in the exchange last night and it looked fairly ugly.
I think that's the key, you have to search to know who you are dealing with especially when they aren't really a part of BF other than on the exchange.
In terms of someone being brought up in the GBU three times for transaction issues, I am not sure where the line Is there on when enough is enough, that's a decision for the Mods....
He probably flaked because someone offered more money than you to buy the knife.
I sure wish there was a policy that allowed Mods to suspend exchange privileges when someone abuses theirs. This guy should be hit with at least a 30 day suspension.
But from the looks of his history on GB&U he is probably doing more harm to himself than any Mod could do!!!
