Nepal news from shop manager

I don't usually weigh in on these types of posts.

First, Hiramranger, sorry to flame but try to be a little less critical. Cold war is long over, and communism really isn't that evil. Simply because the Maoists hold more seats than any other party in the *democratically elected assembly* does not mean the entire country is about to turn into communist china or russia.

I'm sure alot of people have been to nepal or have heard more from the ground, but i suspect many people weighing in on this really know nothing about the Communist (Maoist) Party of Nepal beyond the fact they are "communist".

The maoists have in many ways done more for equality both gnerder-wise and racially than any previous government of the country.

For now, the maoists are largely kept in check by the other parties of the assembly, and in the mean time alot of their policies and intentions are pretty good.

Cut the maoists some slack and wait to see what happens, rather than simply rallying on them because they happen to be communist.

(On a side note, should this thread be moved to the Cantina?)

Radrunner,

I think you'll find that the members of this forum are more informed on the Maoist party in Nepal than usual. I would tend to agree with your statements if they were made in some other forum. However, here at the HI forum, we keep track of the happenings in Nepal pretty closely.

We don't rail on the maoists just because they are communists... but rather the atrocities that they committed over the past several years on the people of Nepal. If you are unaware of them, search the forum or newspapers overseas to see what I'm talking about.

It appears they have changed their tactics, but their past ways show what they are capable of. I would not put it past them to return to their old ways to seize power if they feel threatened.

Hi Radrunner, I don't know if you noticed, but for some very weird reason the people of Nepal elected this guys, so either the Nepali people are not very bright or they might have actually done something right, Its just an idea.

I mean, If you are really really evil and all you do is hurt people, it would seem really crazy that those same guys you hurt on a constant basis would elect you to public to public office?

Let,s just wait an see before judging them. An please don't take my comments as aggressive or anything, I'm really not trying to flame up this discussion.

Best Regards,

Alejandro

Here is an article written back in April about the elections that brought the Maoists into power. The publication appears to be left-leaning, but it offers up a good perspective of the situation. Most noteworthy is the last question at the bottom of the page.

http://mrzine.monthlyreview.org/shrestha140408.html

"JPA: To conclude: Why did we get this election result?

Shyam: In my view there are two major and two minor reasons:

[Added by Alan: First major reason] "People wanted the peace process to succeed and not be broken. If the Maoists had become small they would have been compelled to go to war again. So most of the peace loving people of Nepal voted for the Maoists. People of all classes voted for Maoists for this reason...."

There is more to his response in the article.

All in all, I think it offers up a good summation as to why the people of Nepal would embrace a party that had been damned bloodthirsty over the past decade. They were afraid the Maoists would start the violence again if defeated. The prospect of peace is attractive after living through terror for so long.

Maybe the Maoists can do a better job at governing the country. Maybe not. Only time will tell.

At this point I tend to agree with Radrunner that this thread could probably be moved to the Cantina :).

Cheers,

Alan

Perhaps we're all best to follow Yvsa's lead (or at least his sig's) and keep our hopes high and expectations low.

Look, unless you've been to a third world country, you can't understand what they suffer as part of their daily lives. All these guys who are waiting for the world to end have a rosier picture of the PAW (Post Apocalyptic World) than what most third worlders live on a day-to-day basis.

Perhaps they though a change -- any change -- was worth trying.
I mean, even under Chinese rule, they lose some freedom (I don't really know how much they had to begin with), but China would probably bring them up to at least 2nd world status, just to get China-supporting production out of them.

The Maoists do not seem to favour the continued recruitment of Gurkhas by the British army, so presumably they're against recruitment by the Indian army as well. While not affecting either HI or Tora, that would surely have a serious impact on any company in Nepal with military supply contracts for kukris.

I hope everything works out for the people of Nepal
and I hope this doesn't affect our khukuri supply.

Other than that, I have nothing more to add, as it has been
made quite clear to me in the past that I am not popular
enough to voice an opinion here without being flamed and
trolled by a lynch mob.

Basically the heathen chinee have just taken over Nepal, and you can give up any idea involving freedom in that country.

The people of Nepal has never been free. All powers & parties commited hideous attrocitys.

Will that change? I dont know but I hope so.

The Nepalise maoists are like most Nepalis, true capitalists at heart. Exports will continue. ;)

Hi Cpl Punishment, to whom where you referring to in the third world comment?

Vietnam, certain sub-saharan African countries, etc.

You know, third world countries.
Breaks the heart to see how most of those people have to live, mostly because of their own government.

It's a common mistake to presume all communist/socialist ideologies are exactly the same.

Communism in its purest form isn't necessarily bad. The Amish for example are sort-of communist. some of the european nations lean that way.

IIRC Sweden is both a monarchy and a socialist state. You don't hear tell of much state-sponsored atrocities coming from Sweden.

Perhaps the people of Nepal can all come together and create something beneficial to them all?

Personally, I'd be really glad if this thread stuck to the important thing (IMHO), which is how the guys in the shop are doing.

Not that I mind the political discussion--far from it. But (again IMHO) it should be in the cantina.

Is there any way we can split the two apart?

Speaking of the condition of HI, I notice the website is down and the server is not online. Anyone know if there's a problem?

...

the reason you don't hear it is because the news is generally played down. sweden had compulsory sterilization of 'deviants' up to the 1970's. disabled, mentally ill, people of low intelligence. all to further the social health of the swedes. were people who did not believe in the socialist manifesto mentally ill like in the soviet union or did they finally see the light before it got that far? i do note your use of the word 'much' - how much is too much?

socialism always seems to justify screwing the individual for the sake of the 'masses'.

i hope the new nepali govt. learns from history, it's own and others, and does not repeat the mistakes. i have hope, but low expectations.
