Nepali cuisine

So I tried to order momo from that Nepalese restaurant (delivery) and they sent me the wrong dang thing! It was some sort of fried chicken. Very mild tasting, only a distant hint of Indian flavoring. I liked it but it certainly wasn't what I ordered. I'll try again and check my order next time!

On an unrelated note, last week I went to a Mexican restaurant and noticed they had grasshopper tacos on the menu! I ordered one, and it pretty much was a regular taco but with 20 or so fried grasshoppers rather than meat. They didn't really taste like anything except the sauce they were fried in, by they were quite crunchy. I'd order it again for sure if I saw it on a menu again
 
I think insect protein is a very likely direction for mainstream food to take-- nothing as efficient save perhaps catfish-- never had it but would not hesitate to try it, thanks for sharing blue!-- you need to report back when you finally get some real momo
 
There's a great, really authentic Mexican restaurant and bakery near me, and my favorite thing they make is cabeza tacos. That's the meat from a roasted cow's head, all pulled from the bone and stewed together. The flavor is amazing, it has a strong marrow flavor from being cooked on the bone. It took me a few trips to build up the courage to order it the first time, but now it's my go-to order, and I get sad if they are sold out of it (which happens on the reg).
 
Drop me off at McDonalds folks, bugs and roasted cow heads, well I just ain't hungry no more ya know?

Might be something to add to the Weight Watchers menu for my extremely obese coworker violets, course they'd probably eat it.
 
Fried grasshoppers are supposed to be a real beginners insect. I'm not sure if I'm ready for raw grubs and caterpillars yet. Half the reason I tried them was because of all the articles I read saying we'd all be eating bugs in 50 years.

About a decade ago I worked with a lot of Vietnamese and Laotians, and it was around the time the cicadas came out. They'd eat the bugs right after they'd crawl out of the ground before their shells hardened. Their wives were mortified because they worried their neighbors would think them bug eating savages
 
You don't know what you're missing Bawanna! And if you're eating McDonalds you're probably already used to eating bugs and cow skulls, you just don't know it ;)
 
Yep! Its all there Bawanna! They add that stuff so they can bring the protein levels up to snuff. Wouldnt want to be sued for posting false nutritional info ya know:D
 
Fried grasshoppers tend to taste like whatever they are fried in. Crunchy little morsels, but not a lot of meat on them.

If you want something a little meatier, sometimes you have to shake out your boots.

Looks like scorpions on shrimp toast? Count me in! Just watch out for those stingers!
 
I think the real "gold standard" in bug eating are stuff like live grubs. Squishy writhing things are harder to eat than crunchy ones I guess.
 
You guys are animals, animals I tell ya.

You guys are more hardcore that most of us I guess. I'll eat raw sliced beef or a rare steak, sashimi and sushi, strange cooked Asian foods, Filipino pig blood stew, and a few other things, but scorpions (even fried), tarantulas, live grubs, worms, etc....no way!
 
I'm reminded of my one and only trip to a Sushi restaurant. It was a party for my wifes work, boss owned the place so that's why we were there.

I immediately cozied up to the chef dude behind the counter and politely told him not to put anything in front of me that should be cooked that ain't or things would get very very ugly very quickly.

He was a good guy, I don't think I ate anything abnormal at least that I'm aware of. And the whiskey seemed normal too.
