Never buying liner or frame lock again!

I have owned just about every frame lock and liner lock possible, only two have had no faults in construction (Strider GB and Sebenza). I hate getting a new liner lock to find out there is blade-play. I even bought one of the new Delica's with OD green handles and it had "front to back" blade-play. The only folders I will now trust only Axis locks.

Your really limiting yourself IMO if you only purchase Axis locks. I have seen problems on maybe a hand full of Liner Locks, but I have never seen a faulty Framelock. The fact that you had a Faulty Sebbie and Strider is amazing to me:eek:

I know what you mean. I hate liner locks for the most part. I have a Spyderco Jot Singh Khalsa that has so much play that i can't even use it anymore! But the framelock (especially on the sebenza) is a diff story.

I own one of the older Delica's with the integrated FRN clip and the lock-up is still perfect after ten years of use, but when I bought one of the new OD's, I could actually feel the knife moving "back and forth" as I used it to cut. It may have just been a bad one that passed through QC.

DaveH,

I own three axis locks, one for abou two years, one for 4-5 months, and another for a few days. I have not had any problems yet, all still lock-up perfect. Maybe someday. :D

Axis locks aren't without their problems either....
there was a thread here a while back about a rusted omega spring on a fairly new Axis (forget the model number - all manual BM's are a blur to me)

Sorry to hear that you had bad experiences with liner and framelocks. My axis locked knives have slight lateral blade play, but that's probably a moot point as it's not a failure factor for that type of lock.

Maybe you can join the growing chorus of axis lock fans who want the model 705 produced with M2 steel as a standard option.

Please? :)

1st of all, the Delica is a lockback and lockbacks are known to have frequent vertical bladeplay.

2nd of all, my Axis lock has a very slight amount of bladeplay, almost unnoticeable, but it is still a whole lot more than my liner locking SERE 2000.

Not all liner locks are faulty.

Even though lockbacks like Delica are known to have vertical blade play, I have enough of those from Spyderco to say that it's rare enough for me. The only one that has a little play is the Spyderco Chinook.
You'll be surprised how well made is the liners from Spyderco too. I have the Starmate and this thing locks up good. My friend has a Military and that thing locks up just as well.
Axis locks rely on those tiny Omega springs that are prone to breakage after use. They're redundant (there's 2) but I recall BM has a no disassembly policy, hence you have to ship it back. Nevertheless, it's a good lock design that I need to get my hands on.

I am not generally the biggest fan of liner locks, but the Al Mar Shrike in my pocket today sure has a solid lock up and no blade play. I don't think you can really point a finger at any single type of lock. It seems like they can all work well if executed correctly.

Just got a Spyderco Lum Chinese today. It's a liner lock and has absolutely zero blade play in all directions. I even tried to wiggle the blade in all directions after reading this thread and nothing. So I guess you just had some bad experiences? Whatever, I'm happy with my two liner locks.

I have stopped carrying linerlocks for defense or general use myself this year after 20 years of linerlocks of all kinds.

I trust in lockbacks [ front lock, mid lock, backlocks ] staying locked until "I" say unlock.

Oh, I like the linerlocks, I just don't trust them to not open in my pocket if tip up configged or releasing the lock on a spine tap where my fingers are at risk.

If it can happen it will, and it has, thats why no more linerlocks grace my pockets.

You should be able to adjust for any lateral play at the pivot screw. Give it a try. By definition, vertical blade play in an Axis lock should be automatically compensated for.:)
