NEVER cut yourself???? (Warning - a few graphic pics)

I think I cut myself once with a kitchen knife while making dinner and once recently after I received my Sebenza back from a spa treatment at CRK. Thing was stupid sharp and I wasn't used to it being that sharp. I have never cut myself playing with a knife though, not even slightly.

I get bitten every once in a while. Mostly out of my own stupidity while handling a new folder. Never had to get stitches though. Knock on wood 🪵

I nick myself a few times a year. Nothing too drastic. Never went to the ER or needed any type of medical care. A few swear words and a bandage.

After 35 years of handling knives, I'm quite careful.

I was a Boatswain’s Mate on navy ships for fifteen years. A pretty hazardous environment. Probably used my knife a hundred times a day and never cut myself badly enough to need stitches.

After the military I went to college, got a degree and worked as a chemist synthesizing reagents. About every six months I’d have to go get stitched up having cut myself on broken glassware. Go figure.

As a fellow chemist I feel your pain 😂 as soon as I see chipped glass it goes straight into the broken glass box and I order 2 more!

Nothing requiring professional care, but a new Rat 1 bit me out of the box about 5 years ago, it was way sharper than I expected. I'm now much more careful and have acquired maybe 60 knives since then.

I can count on my hands the times I've cut myself. it hasn't been that many. only once was it real bad and needed stitches. didn't get them just duct taped it closed. took days for it to stop bleeding, but it finally healed up. i was a kid school age. my thumb print didnt line up properly when it healed. that was a kitchen knife cutting up a watermelon.

its gonna happen if you are using them or even cleaning or refinishing or even playing with them. shouldn't happen a lot though. if it does ya have to learn to pay more attention and learn from mistakes.
I can count on my hands how many times I’ve cut myself too. Only from the scars though lol. Thank god for fingernails because that was the only thing that stopped the knife from cutting further the last decently noteworthy one. I think if you play with knives you’re going to get cut. Especially if learning sharpening, disassembly etc. never have got stitches from one. Should’ve, but if you can get a cut to stop bleeding super glue does wonders

I cut myself pretty good once last year, but nothing yet this year. Now if you'll excuse me I'm going outside in the dark to use my knife in the brush...

In the UK we use slipjoints, and I can’t remember cutting myself in normal use.
I have definitely cut myself.
Peeling potatoes with a potato peeler. Required stitches.
I took the flesh top off my thumb chopping sticks for the fire.
Sharpening or even just honing, I think I’ve cut myself more often during this activity than nearly any other. More kitchen knives than any other.
All my worst injuries and none of them too bad really have been with wood chisels.
Once on a pitching boat at sea when I managed to catch a filleting knife. That’s called stupidity not using a knife.

The thing about stupidity is I believe it to be inevitable you just have to try and limit the number of occurrences.

Edit - I forgot ! I tried shaving with G G Grandfather’s Open Razor, I didn’t nick myself or cut myself, I sprung a leak. You can still see a white line a little over 2inches long if I’m out on the sun for a bit. It wasn’t serious, it stung a little, more that night but it spread blood all round the bathroom sink and floor frightened my mother and gave my father’s workmates a laugh. Nearly 40 years ago.

I need to start carrying some superglue when I go out chopping…
Yep. I’m an idiot. Don’t be like me. Somehow I always get tiny wounds from large, sharp knives. I suppose I’ll take the minor cuts, compared to what could happen. A wise old man once told me “If you wouldn’t put your d![< there, don’t put your hand there.” He was right, I didn’t listen. I've had a few here and there that were mainly due to dinner prep with my very sharp gyutos. I did have one slipjoint cut that resulted in a urgent care center where they glued it back together. The cut was so clean that the glue worked and didn't require stitches since it was just skin/flesh and nothing important :)

Yikes - cuts on cuts! Always pay attention to old guys. ;)

Ha - another reason a sharp knife is a safer knife - shortened recovery time when you make a mistake…

(Hmm - but probably a deeper cut too so… Hmm) ;)

Did you?? Nope, bet you went out and learned for yourself. Or maybe you’re smarter than me. 😆 Anyway, I can assure you that there was no booze or testosterone involved with those pics. 🤔😅😇 Great thread btw.

Funny this should come up! About 6AM this morning I was fiddling with my current carry, a jumbo stockman, while the pump was running and nicked myself pretty good not paying attention. Bled like a stuck hog but very superficial. Carrying a knife daily since the age of 5, I’ve had everything from nicks to pretty bad cuts from them. I’m not a fan of stitches, more of a butterfly bandage and superglue kinda guy here. And not because I don’t know how to use a slip joint, usually in the act of opening one because I used to carry nailbreakers if I really liked the knife and easily bendable thumbnails would lead to a blood leak sometimes.

Couple months ago I gave my youngest son a small, cheap linerlock. He asked me to touch it up so I did and laid it on the kitchen counter while I washed my hands afterwards and he went to pick it up and it slipped out of his hand and landed Point down on my left foot. That cheap Chinese pointy thing went through my tennis shoe and stuck into the top of my foot. He cried and cried and was dang near inconsolable (he’s 9) even after I showed him I was fine and it was just a lot of blood but no real injury other than soreness. Then he fell asleep in my lap just like when he was little. He thought he’d really hurt me bad. I was just glad it was me being the pin cushion instead of him.
