Spyderco, Kershaw, or BUCK (all USA models, but Spyderco Seki City & Taiwan). What say you? Tell me the knives you got straight from the package (production, mid-tech, or custom) that had a hair-splitting edge! Case usually always comes with a heavy burr, but when you knock it off it's sharp as a razor! I would also like to add that anything SNODY or Ban Tang was always molecule-splitting sharp! Let's take a moment to reflect on the companies & makers who take the time to give you a screaming edge!

ETA: also need to add anything Tom Krein reground is scary frikkin sharp!

I've posted this here many times. My Dad was a lifelong Hunter and Sportsman...and a lifelong Buck 110 classic "Folding Hunter" guy.

Some of the fears/anxieties that kinda' "imprint" themselves on you, in your childhood, really seem to stay with you for some reason. Because of that, I still have a healthy fear of the factory edges on the Buck 110s and 119s. Those two knives have bitten me more times than I'd like to count.

With that, the knife that absolutely amazed me (*when it came to the factory edge) was the Cold Steel 4MAX Scout in AUS 10A. I don't know if I just got an outlier, or if they all come that sharp. However, that thing was like a laser out of the box. It was RIDONKULOUSLY sharp. I don't think I've EVER encountered a sharper edge...

I'd had a few Jack & Zeros one night and got a little froggy with this TOPS "Pasayten Lite Traveler". In return, it almost unceremoniously removed the first knuckle of my trigger finger...

I've been bitten by a few BUCKS in my time!

By far, the sharpest out of the box knife I ever owned was a TRM Neutron 2.
It easily tree topped arm hair!
It was the only truly "scary sharp" knife I ever saw!

I’ve never seen a factory edge that couldn’t be improved.

All this hype about factory edges is silly. It’s usually done with a belt grinder in about 4 seconds. Buck has put out videos of this.

If you can’t do better at home, taking your time with quality stones, you have my sympathy. But you can definitely learn how.

I would rather get a dull blade than one with a recurve it shouldn’t have. A rounded off tip. Or burnt edge.

I don't think I have ever gotten a factory made knife that I thought was sharp enough or clean enough out of the box. If I am going to carry it, then it goes on this contraption and when it comes off it is ready.

Best factory edges for me have been Microtechs. Benchmades have been without a doubt the worst.

I have to jump in here. I have been at this for a long time. I recently purchased a Quiet Carry Drift L directly from QC. I don’t know if it’s just the .090 thick Vanax blade steel or what, but I have never had a blade this sharp! Truly “scary” sharp out of the box!

Though I do not have a large sample size of each knife brand that I’ve listed, I have never received a dull Spyderco, Chris Reeve, TRC, J.E. Made, or WE knife. Case and Benchmade…definitely hit or miss with those two.

Ironically both my CRKs came dull towards the tips. I assume since they sharpen them on belts they're careful not to poke the tip into the belt, as it catch the blade and send it flying in any direction. Most knifemakers I know have nightmare stories related to that.

WE/Civivi do decent jobs too.

Spyderco's edges have been very hit or miss for me, since I reprofile on a fixed angle system I don't think I've ever had a Spyderco with an even angle across the length of the blade or on each side, but at least they're sharp and don't have a burr. Benchmades I immediately reprofile, just bad edges, nightmare nightmare nightmare bad.

I use a kme. I dont know what you consider quality stones but the diamond stones kme provides and the lapping films let me create a edge even on s90v that can wittle a hair. I dont ever do a micro bevel either. I sharpen my knives at the factory angle unless the knife needs a bit of a reprofile out of the box (Looking at you benchmade)

I don't know if I've ever had a knife that was actually dull out of the box, but I have had a lot that had uneven or asymetrical edge grinds (I'm looking at you ZT, Spyderco, Benchmade ) I also feel like the factory edge on my Hinderer was less than stellar.

That being said, I have 4 Microtechs, and I would say they all have had the best factory edges I have experienced thus far.
