Never have I ever gotten a dull.....

I don't know if I've ever had a knife that was actually dull out of the box, but I have had a lot that had uneven or asymetrical edge grinds (I'm looking at you ZT, Spyderco, Benchmade )

That being said, I have 4 Microtechs, and I would say they all have had the best factory edges I have experienced thus far.
First thing I do with benchmades are look down the spine and see how off center the tip is. Because I've just come to expect I'm going to need to use my 50 grit stone on it.

Most of my factory knives in the past 10+ years have been Spyderco and they have been fairly sharp. I don't recall any of any brand that I thought were very dull out of the box. Also I buy a lot of knives second hand so I don't worry if they are sharp or not. When a knife needs sharpening then I sharpen it. Quite a few years ago I bought a used Benchmade that came with a polished slightly convex edge. It was very sharp and stayed sharp for a long time.

The absolute worst I have experienced was a fixed blade from a maker here. That thing couldn't consistently tear printer paper. (It was just as likely to not grab & slide down the edge as it was to grab and tear. Cut paper? Not a chance. I tried to sharpen it with my KME but couldn't hit the edge...so I sent it off to Josh.
Same. Both My Spartans have been rather dull.
My blue Plague Doctor had a decent edge when I received it. I had to send it in for some warranty work and, while they had it, they went ahead and took that off for me. I did a quick freehand touch up with a CBN rod & called it good enough. They fixed the issues for which I'd returned it, and got it back to me quickly. I probably shouldn't poke fun about them taking the edge off - I'm sure they were only concerned for my safety.

CRK edges have been pretty disappointing to me.

As far as the intended topic: I've never gotten a dull REK, CPK, or Bradford.

Most factory edges are about a 400 - 600 grit finish. Even if they are fairly sharp and centered I want the edge to be cleaner and a finer finish and sometimes at a different angle. I have diamond hones that take it down to 3000 grit and then ceramics and finally leather strops with polishing paste to bring the edge to a mirror edge that I can see myself in. While I don't go to this level of polish on every knife I use, it certainly makes them cut better. What some people call micro-serrations are just very small dull spots.

WE and Reate have pleasantly surprised me lately. Wicked sharp out of the box. Complete opposite of anything I’ve gotten from Spartan Knives. ( ducks after throwing shade)

As much as I love Spartan, I would have to agree that both of mine came new with a less than desirable sharpening (I wouldn't call them dull, but they weren't great).

As for the favs, I think TRM and North Arm are standouts for me.

Yet some people will send their knives back to be sharpened. They have a Life sharp guarantee! Sad.

If I sent a knife back to get a factory edge. My father would come back from the dead and personally revoke my man card. 😂

I truly believe that Cold Steel's San Mai Trailmaster's could very well be one of the, if not THE sharpest factory knives out there. The convex edge that Hattori puts on them has to be experienced to be believed, and most importantly they seem to be extremely consistent with this, I've handled 3 different samples all new in the box and all were equal.

It's especially more impressive considering it's a 9 inch 5/16 inch thick slab of steel.

Kunwu knives. I believe a lot of their edges have been BESS tested at just over 100 from the factory.

Can't remember a knife that wasn't sharp out of the box, some better than others -- Spyderco, for instance. Most though had at least a tiny burr, easily remedied.

Spyderco, Buck, Hogue, Kershaw, Cold Steel, CutCo, Mora, and David Mary David Mary have all provided to me knives that were sticky sharp out of the box. FortyTwoBlades FortyTwoBlades has also sent to me machetes that are sharper than most kitchen knives will ever be. I usually reprofile new blades pretty quickly after their arrival, but it's more fun to get a knife that's already sharp from the get-go.

Hogue Ritters come with an almost mirrored polished edge. First time that I have seen this in a factory made knife.
