WOW! Made out of wood. Now that is something you don't see everyday. More pictures would be nice if you could. Thanks for sharing. John

Very cool! A couple bucks and some shade tree brain cells = a lot less money than my wilton, inspire the willing with a parts/supply list.

Opps, I posted the first pic before I was ready.

I built a two wheel 2x72 to replace the 1/3hp Craftsman 2x42. Now I can use those legendary Blaze belts:)

The frame is 3/4" Douglas fir plywood, laminated together with Gorilla glue and wood screws. The 10" contact wheel is from Grizzly, most of the other parts are from Knifemaker USA. The 1hp, 1725rpm motor is from Pricess Auto. I have 3-stack pulleys but will only run it two speeds - 2250fmp, and 4500fpm, the fastest speed of 9000fpm might be a bit scarey and hard on bearings.

Bruce,

That is awesome bro! This thread deserves :D:thumbup:

Well done man, now get some Blaze and grind some steel like a pro!

Congrats,

Chris

Bruce Bump - my knife shop is the little brown building with the ladder leaning against it.

I'll give you guys an update as to how it actually grinds in the next day or two.

Before I could only do flat and slack belt grinds. Now I'll be able to hollow grinds and as soon as I get a jig built - Scandi grinds too.

Bruce what is the link chain with spring for ? and how does this set up allow for hollow grind ? by holding blade against lower wheel ?

I like it bruce. only pay attention to the sparks. if you will grind a lot the wood can burn. you could consider put a piece of tin as a wood shield.
anyway the wooden belt grinder can become a fantastic, easy-to-build and cheap choise.
damn good job!

Bruce what is the link chain with spring for ?
roland

I think that's for tensioning the idler wheel at the top -- note that the arm is pivoted in the center. The spring and chain pull down, the other end with the wheel pushes up on the belt.

Roland - the spring is for the belt tension (as zerogee said). For hollow grinding I'll just tilt the whole unit back 15-20 degress and grind the bevels on the bottom wheel.

loneronin - good point a tin shield on the wood between the conact wheel and the motor should work.

Bruce! Great design here, I have been wondering about trying to build a simular setup out of wood. You have done all the brain work for us. Really looks great!

Any chance you might have time to put some dimensions up on here when you are not playing with your new grinder? Would be greatly appreciated!!

Very nice work. I'm still setting up shop and I would really like to build somethign similar eventually. right not I'm working with a crappy $40, 1"x30" belt sander I got from harbor freight. but once I get my hands on a nice electric motor I want to build a 2"x72" belt grinder. I was thinking of angle iron/unistrut but the wood is looking pretty nice and is definitely easier to work with, I like your design.
