New Alox SAK hunter pro

I was initially excited about this one...until I saw the weight, blade steel, and price point given the materials used.

Interesting knife, though. More power to those who have one and are carrying/putting it to good use!

I was ready to pull the trigger on one but paused when I saw the price and looked at the steel used, at $99 for a Victorinox I expect a steel upgrade. Still haven’t ruled it out yet though.

It's a very nice looking knife, to my eye. I think the aesthetics are spot on and I'm a HUGE fan of Victorinox. I carry one every single day. However, I have to agree with what seems to be the majority opinion here, in that for the price, that steel hurts the value proposition. At that price, I'd argue it doesn't even need to be a super steel, but VG10, 154CM or even 14c28n or similar would have been more fitting.

You can get a Buck Spitfire, which looks remarkably like this Victorinox (or vice versa, actually) in S30V for about $50 and aluminum scales. $65 will get the same blade and micarta scales.

Ya don't even have to bump up to $65. Copper and Clad sells it for $60 with free shipping. Until I gave it to my cousin and best friend, I had #009 from the first run. It's a great knife.

The knife is well made like I said and slices great, just not crazy about the blade shape, finish, or opening hole. wish it was shaped and finished like their spear point blades on their SAKs not a beadblast spyderco style.Alox handles are nice too. Its definitely questionable for 100.00,i don't think its worth it especially being riveted together.

Maybe also VG10? But some people just want a simple steel that they can sharpen themself. I, for example, don't have the equipment to sharpen S30v or a supersteal like CPM3v, so I prefer a softer steel and I just sharpen it more often.

Edit: The steel seems to be X55CrMo14 aka EN 1.4110 which is hardened to 56HRC, so yes it is on the softer side of the spectrum.
You can sharpen those steels easily with sand paper but I get your point. I just got tired of sharpening saks so often. Once or twice a week is more maintenance than I’m looking for but my knife needs are more than the average user. I like saks a lot so I’m still hoping they upgrade one of these days.

the price point is all wrong. kinda like the mora pathfinder pricing was/still is all wrong as well. the steel, weight size etc can be lived with if the price was right. all that stuff is nitpicking if the pricing was right.

for 100 bucks the door opens wide for choices in better steels, sizes, weights and all the other glorious nitpicking.

Had the same dilema over the mora garberg seems like its priced high for what you get, theres better choices for the price...

I have little experience with super steels, but I read that the learning curve of sharpening them is steep. (when you sharpen by hand) I think Victorinox is too traditional to switch to super steels.

I'm confused by the responses here. They came out with a Alox version of a model they've been making for years... Just like the Alox versions of their SAK's. Why would anyone think or expect it would be any different than the regular Hunters except with Aluminum scales?

It seems like the criticism here is for the original Hunter models, which have been available for years. Personally, they've been on my to-buy list for years, as well as the DP Gerber Gator in 154 CM. Both feel great in the hand for long, extended use.

That's a nice looking knife. Too bad it so obviously copies the spyderhole.

We hate counterfeiters and copiers here, right?

I have one on the way. I'll give y'all my opinion when it arrives.

Got it! I'll post some pics later.

OK, first impressions…

It’s big, heavy, imperfect, but beautiful and Swiss. Like me.

I like it!

Cost me 95 CHF (basically the same in USD)

It’s very ergonomic (for my medium hands). I feel I could use it all day without issue. Even the clip doesn’t give any obvious hotspot.

Opens smooth and locks up solid. If I really crank on it I can get some side to side wiggle. Zero up and down.

Centering is a bit off. The blade is about a hair away from rubbing on the clip side.

Grinding on the swedge is a bit off as well.

The edge is sharp, but a bit uneven and the point could be pointier, but that’s an easy fix.

Could you find a better constructed knife with better materials for the same cost (or less)?

Yes.

Will that stop me from liking it?

No.

It will live in my pocket for a while and I’m gonna use the snot out of it.

I’ll report back after it’s got some miles on it.
