Hi everyone,

I had access to a scanner for a couple of hours, so I scanned some better photos of the ATR Prototype. Enjoy!

Sal is pushing for production ASAP. My conservative guess is 6 months (4th Qtr 2002).

interesting lock on that. can't wait to check it out. there is nothing like something new.

The lock on the ATR is Spyderco's integral Compression Lock. Another example would be the Titanium Salsa (the aluminum ones have a nested compression lock). It is a great lock, to say the least. Lockup is very solid, and with my aluminum Salsa, I have no fear of accidentally releasing the lock in a normal grip. The integral lock, drawing from the thicker liner metal, is even more solid. It's one of those locks where you just think, "Why didn't I think of that? It's so simple!"

There's been a lot of praise for this piece so I'll probably be in the minority here, but I'll share my opinions anyway.

I don't like the looks of this knife and I don't feel any need to get one. I know that this is only a prototype pictured, but here are my observations:
1. The clip does not look well mounted. Its mounting point should be recessed and moved further towards the butt. I would also beg Spydreco not to implement this style clip. While I love my Temperance Jr, I don't like the way it draws. The amount of friction that the clip places on the pocket is too much, in my opinion. It's one thing to have a secure clip, but quite another to place so much drag on a draw. (It also chews up pants)
2. The blade shape and grind hold no interest to me. I don't want a knife that's almost as much swedge as edge.
3. The butt of the handle looks cheap. I can't quite put my finger on it, but it reminds me of the Fury knives that contaminate the shelves of local knife dealers. Maybe it's the flat bottom contrasted with the curves... I don't know.
4. The handle should be anodized, coated, whatever. Maybe this could be a chance for Spyderco to use the BC coating? It could certainly aid to resist the scratches that the handle will receive.

What are the three dots at the bending point of the lockbar?

Hey Sal,

Since this is still just a proto I'm not going to get to worked up ;), but please set the clip up for left and right carry on the real one.

By the way, it's a great looking knife. A BC coated version would be really nice option.

How hard is spyderco going to make their S30V? I see some concern over at the CReeve forum on this matter.
I like this knife but I think a more rounded handle butt would make it look better, that flat end does seem like too much contrast.

Thanks for the pictures Carlos. I like the point profile quite a bit, and the handle looks good too (even the flat butt). Is that a hollow grind or flat grind? How close do you think eventual production will be to this prototype? Thanks.

Nice scans Carlos!! I really appreciate it, this knife is a must-have for me and I have been anticipating it for a loooong time.

My wife thinks the holes make it the entire thing look like peas in a pod, so she has dubbed it "the Spyderco Pea-pod"!
It will be really funny if it is available in green.

Good luck,
Allen.

Hi Burke,

The blade is double hollow ground (edge and swedge) -- basically a modified dagger grind.

I think that the production model will be pretty close to this. This is a very early prototype from over a year ago, but I expect that most of the changes made are small refinements. If you've seen a Salsa, then you'll know that the Cobra Hood will be a bit more prominent. But otherwise this is basically "it."

I assume then that the other pictures of the ATR proto from the SHOT show are of a newer prototype. It looks a little more refined than this one and the the clip is more sofisticated (and ambi :)).

You are right John, this picture is newer by a number of months -- it is just not a very good image. ;)

The swedge almost seems to form some kind of horn near the front of the blade. Does this serve some special purpose?

To me it seems this will damage one´s pockets in the long term.

Still, I will get at least one, this is a very interesting design.

I hope these make it to production soon. I am eagerly anticipating this one.

Sebenza, move over AGAIN! Boy, there sure is getting to be less and less room for the Sebenza these days!:p
