New ATR Prototype Photos.

HOLD on, there, pardner.
250 MSRP.
That's only a high indication of price.
I guess you'll be able to get it for around.....
170??? maybe 150.

So sorry to be me the one who sais it... but this knife is ugly. And I mean ugly :( I can live with the Assist (I even started to want an Assist 2, imagine that), but this... this... is a hitech, expensive, ugly knife. Amazing how a few shapes can make the difference between sublime and ridiculous

Once again I agree with Dialex. Ugly.

Hey, thanks for your helpful opinions.

Look, the knife is designed for stabbing people. It appears that is probably has some utility value, perhaps could be used for skinning.

Since I have use for neither of these tasks - I am not interested in this knife. But if the goal was to create a "pretty" knife, then Spyderco could just take the same blade design and keep slapping new handles on it, like one of their competitors.

I like that blade design, a lot actually, it gives you the ability to carry a good thrusting tool legally. I agree that the butt looks a lot like some of the cheap Fury's, but so what. Square pommels thumb cap better. Good knife to put the Cobra Hood on . . .

I'll buy one.

Thanx Architect....I think?

Ugly? Ugly? I thought it was one of our prettier designs. Oh well.

Close tolerance Titan handles with integral compression lock that's MBC rated for lock strength. That alone with go nose to nose with anthing out there, custom or production (or semi-production).

3.5" (89mm) CPM-S30V blade with a double hollow grind. 14mm opening hole with Cobra hood. Simple, Light, Strong, Tough.

Wow, you guys are cruel!

Sal,

I was with you until you mentioned the cobra hood. I gotta level with you man. I love the hell out of your work but. Either the hole or the hood, quit stickin both on there, it just doesn't work for me. Give me the option or something like that. I do not care for the cobra hood. I'm starting to think you could run the cobra hoods in special issues or something like the SS handles.
Either way it's about the only bitch I have and I'm probably still gonna buy an ATR just cause I love the look of it. so there.

Thanx Chambers. It will take some time to assess the hood. Time in the field is the only real test. Remember in the beginning, we were told the same thing about the hole.

Well Sal, it's not a design I would use, and it doesn't fall into my "got to have it in my display case" either. I simply get tired of seeing whiny, content-starved "opinions".

Regarding the comment about slapping on new handles, I was trying to say that you have to respect the fact that Spyderco keeps striving to enhance the elemental functionality of the edged tool. Some other companies keep churning out the same design, over and over with simple variations in steel and handle materials.

I like collectibles too, but that seems to be a kind of "thin" mission in and of itself.

I don't care for the looks of the "hood" but I do like the function of it. It is removable though if you don't like it, correct? I was thinking they are. The square butt does throw the asthetics off some but looks like it will provide a nice purchase in a reverse hand grip and maybe make a nice impact weapon area. Overall I want one of these and have been excited about them coming since I 1st saw the proto's. I like the blade style also, it is a very usefull one on the Jesters and I am glad to see a larger version.

I have to agree with the "ugly" group. I love Spyderco, but the ATR is one that is "too ugly to live." Sorry Sal.
If you wanted to make some S30V Calypso Jr.'s on the other hand...

:D Aaah, now we're talking real business here! S30V Calypso jr. YES! The FRN and full flat ground version, of course.

Is it just me or does the overall concept of the ATR bear an uncanny resemblance to the late, much lamented StarMate? If you were to put titanium scales and an intgral lock in it, I swear that it would be in the same niche, exactly.

I for one *really* like the Cobra Hood. The best of both the hole & the disc/stud. Function function function. Remember when everybody hated the hole?

I have a strong notion that the pictures of the ATR do the knife little justice.

I've handled one of the prototypes (many moons ago) and if it's anywhere near what I saw- it's a winner. Amazing ergos. Needs to be handled to be appreciated. I'm sure it's been "tweaked" quite a bit since.
