New Bark River Knife and Tool Bushcrafter...

What knife are you talking about Brian? The Bushcrafter above?

TF

Yeah, the Bushcrafter. DLT placed the order for the run so they will be the main distributor. I figured that some might not have noticed that it says "convexed" in the picture. The height of the grind will be a Scandi but it will have a slight convex. Mike has a firm opinion on what he feels a traditional Scandi grind is. There was a bit of debate when the Liten Bror came out. I doubt they would ever do a true flat bevel.

Is this a revival of the HCF knife with a scandi?

Both the Bushcrafter and the HCF have almost the same specs as the Gunny

Overall Length: 8.4 Inches
Blade Length: 3.775 Inches
Blade Steel: A-2 @ 58rc
Blade thickness: .154 Inch
Weight: 5.625 Ounce

The Gunny is on the schedule to made in 3V this year and will probably be available in drop and spear point.

Bark river makes a ton of knives and it is hard to be innovative every time.

All their stuff is quality but it is easy to want it all!

Hmmmm - Interesting.

The blade height (Per Bark River) is 1.007 (Added to the specs above).

My Gunny's blade height (spine to edge) is: 0.948

The lanyard tube is also larger - 3/8th inch.

So this handle is quite a bit more stout than a Gunny with a more neutral grip. This is looking more interesting all the time.

I am not a fan of a convex scandi in a sense - but with 3V - convexing and edge would be much easier.

The Bushcrafters are up the DLT website. They are nice but 3V is a pricey steel I guess. To rich for my blood.

I will take good ol' A2 any day. It seems to the hype about "super steel" hypes up the price as well. I am sure it is worth it but I cannot justify it.

The way the handle tapers to toward the blade makes it seem more like a hunting/skinning knife, like the Fox River. For strong cuts into hard material, a thicker handle up toward the blade would seem more appropriate.

Sharpshooter sheaths are hit or miss. I LOVE their gunny sheaths and a few others - but the leather is a bit thin on their bushcrafters. JRE used to make their sheaths and I wish they still did. A little thicker and a little nicer end product.

TF

Agreed. I just had JRE make a cricket for my aurora. Dan was willing to listen to me and answer my questions. While SS would simply say that our sheaths are perfect.

Bushcrafter and Gunny. I borrowed this pic from Nasty. Mike will have the comparison pics up tonight or tomorrow.

They look good.

I don't think I'll get one because I have an older Koster Bushcrafter that is full scandi in 3V. Interesting IMO 3V is one of the best blades for a full scandi as far as toughness but they are making them convex.

Also I like 1/8" or thinner and these are thicker, more like the BRKT full convex knives. With the full convex the thick spine doesn't wedge as much but with a scandi a blade that thick will be wedgier. Good for batoning not so good for slicing.

Yeah - wow - 220 on up - is a LOT for this knife.

TF

You know I think over 200 for any knife is a lot of money.

However realistically you look at quite a few of the popular knifemakers here on the forum. They have their blanks cut out just like Bark River does. They farm out their heat treating like Bark River does. They do the final edge and put some nice wood on the handle like Bark River does but maybe just leave the forge finish on there and then they charge as much or more than 200! For an 01 blade!

Wow - I am liking the look of this knife.

I agree with that Hollow - but most knifemakers you have here on Bladeforums are immediately accessible and you can get custom work from them. Also - they will take care of any issue you have with your custom knife in a hurry. These are some of the intangibles that larger companies can't offer.

With that said - Bark River has excellent customer service and I have had no issue with them - so I can see what you are saying. I think what I am trying to say is that custom makers on this board don't have the workforce that Bark River has - nor do they have their scales C&C Machined for them. Their time on each blade is a lot less than a custom maker - this usually translates to a decreased price - in this case it does not.
