they called me and let me know they have have a new belt to compete with blaze. i ll keep you al updated on how well it works

Does it address the problem with Blaze and the black built up gunk it leaves on the platen?

i ll be looking for that vary thing nate and also how it brakes down to expose new grit (this is a big one for me since i cant really lay into the grinder like a bowie maker can )

If it's the VSM's or the MERIT's they just don't compare. I tried the 36 and 50 and they don't have the life of a 100 grit BLAZE......that are currently 5.00 at
USA knifemaker.

i think they sad boar on the phon msg but i think i ll be picking up the test belts today and i ll have mor info for sure then

I thought I ws the only one who had that problem. :D

Meh. Some belts, if they get damp, form a hard plasticy goo that sticks to the platen and then gets picked up by the belt and picks up grit and then can wear a platen out very quickly. I think it's an evil concoction of the resin bond and (ironically) grinding aids, coolant, lubricant that work great for the belt's intended purpose (centerless grinding from a contact wheel or whatever) but sometimes don't work well in our application. Some belts cause problems, some don't. Some only cause problems if they get damp, some don't. If it's like Blaze, it didn't used to do it, but they changed it and now it does.

My go-to belt right now is the Klingspor LS 312 and it gets pretty weird if you get it wet, but if you wash it first (the non-grit side) it's a champ. I have had a 3M belt chew up a hardened platen in one belt because I got it wet. It's a waterproof belt. 977 I believe. Dreadful thing.

They had told me in an email a couple weeks ago they had a belt to compete with the Blaze.
The description though says that they require significant pressure to fracture the grain, which is the same as the Blaze.
I may have to try some soon as I am getting ready to order some new 80 grits.

I'm liking the 984's I got last... just ground a 2-1/4" wide chef blade with a fairly used one, still had a lot of bite.

Man, they call you to let you know that stuff? I must rate low on the totem pole ;) LOL

I thought all belts left crap on the platen?

My current favorite rough grit belt is the 3M... uh I can't remember if it's a 967 or 977 or??? It's yellow. IME, it lasts longer than a Blaze, and you don't have to try to push the grinder over or run it ballz out, in order to make the belt work.

ok the belt name is bora 7 its purple (i think they made it just for sams unicorn ) i have 3 x36 grit and 2 60 grit its a full ceramic media not the mix leik the blue ice belts. it does not look like it has any coatings on the back
it is built to compete with blaze adn cuberton SP? 2
i ll get pictures and more info as i go. i will be grinding on hardened XHP and cpm3v then also on soft XHP

Thats the 967, we get ours from Pops..

I don't wet grind, but that yellow Cubitron 50/60 is WAY better than anything else I've used. I get multiple blades out of each one and then use the poo out of em for random cleanup and shop grinding.

I love the 984 cubitron ii. I think they're better than the yellow 967. The 984 feels more aggressive than the 967 for any given grit but that could just be in my head.

It'll be nice to see how the bora 7 works out.

Ive never used the 967 or 984....says to use dry. Does anyone get them wet?

Yep, that's it, thanks :) I double checked yesterday after posting. Got mine from the Poplins too... great folks! :)

Last time I ordered from them, I got 967s, 977s (that's why I couldn't remember which was which yesterday) and a bunch of different "economy" belts (just to try out). The economy belts work GREAT for handles and so-so for steel.

I liked that the 977 could get wet, and it ground well... but I just feel like the 967 ground more aggressively and cleaner. When grinding a blade, I tend to dip it in the 'ol bucket quite a bit and just the idea of keeping the blade dry bugged me.

But in actual use, I just keep a hand towel tucked in my belt and run the blade over the towel if I get it wet. It's not like you have to stop grinding and go dry the blade out with a heat gun. PLUS, the 967s grind so well for me, that I don't need to dip the blade very much.

I haven't tried the 984. It seems some folks like them, but I'd like to see if they are worth the difference in cost.

Sorry Butch... didn't mean to derail your thread! I am looking forward to your experience with this new belt. :)

no nick this is all good and i want to know what people want me to keep any eye out for with these. for me this wil be tricky as i grind so much thin stuff and alot of SS so im not sure how it wil convert to the steel pounding crowd
