new belt at supergrit

any and all sreview is good
as far as waht grit im int the hog with 50 grit cause its just smoother to grind with thena 36 and faster then 80

Yeah... seems like I'm heading that way. Which do you prefer in large (36-40) grit? In what situations does one perform better than the other?
Thanks Don.
Like Mike said, I usually start with 60 grit, don't like 36 or 40 at all. That said, I do use some 50 grit 967's to hog on large blades. Between the two, 984s' are more aggressive, but both are fantastic!

Thanks for the grear review, Erin!

I've tried the 967's on the recommendation of many talented makers and didn't care for them. The 984's work well for me, but the 977's continue to be my favorite 3M belt.

Exact opposite here. I've tried 977s' several times and get no life out of them???

Well, I'd agree with you that those yellow (967) belts tend to last forever. I keep them for hogging and such and they last an amazingly long time.

But when it comes to grinding bevels, I much prefer the feel of a fresh, sharp belt. And I just haven't noticed much of a difference in how long that "sharp" feeling lasts from the various 60-grit ceramic belts. As of late I've been using the $3.50 ceramic belts that Trugrit offers. I think one is Merit and the other VSM. I still keep 977's on hand because I love them, but it's much, much easier for me to follow dictum of "use belts like they're free" when I'm tossing a $3.50 belt as opposed to a $7-8 belt! :D

As a guy just getting started making my own knives I find this thread very helpful.

I have been using 967s, and they cut good for me when fresh. Im waiting on an order with a variety of belts to try out including blaze, 984 blue norton zirc and trizact cf to see what matches with my grinding style.

"grinding style" is i thinkkwhat we are realy coming down to
i have to by the nature so my blades grind lightly and carry a big stick so to say. i can flex a kithen knife around a platen and i sure cant press hard on a razor and those are my meat and tators of my work
if i was makknig bowies an dchoppers my belt choices wouel likly be much different

Thanks for the info Don. Looks like my next order will be for a few of each (967 and 984).
I'm not a big fan of the 977s either... but it's not because of their "lifespan". I just don't like the way that they cut or feel. It's strange how two belts of the same grit can cut and feel completely different. The 977s can be agressive, but they don't seem to cut clean for me... they just feel bad.

I am surprised how well the cheap blue AZ-X Al-Ox/Zirc belts are performing for me. They don't last as long as a ceramic... but I can buy four for the price of one Blaze/967/984. For pre-HT hogging, this economy seems to be worth it.

I have used norton blaze in 36,60 grit with good results. On my 2x72 grinder they last two or three times longer then SG's deer economy ceramic. The blaze belts work well with light pressure and build up less heat then the economy ones. As they wear you have to press a bit harder but they still cut well. I have some 3M 967's on the way so I will be able to compare the two. I don't have a variable speed grinder so feel I need a good performing belt to balance things out.

The ones from Pop's? I agree, they're pretty darn good. And at $2.10 for a 60-grit belt it's easy to toss them aside and grab another when they stop cutting. They're actually cheaper than most AO belts . . .

This is a great point. When hollowing grinding with the 10" wheel the increased life of the high-end ceramics is more noticeable for me. But I mostly flat grind, and pretty aggressively, which results in me killing an expensive belt almost as quickly as an inexpensive one.

I use the cheap blue belts from Pop's, but only on handle materials, hard to beat the price!
I might try em on the next blade.

Right. Grinding on a flat platen kills belts very quick!

Bump. Ground some Nessy's in A2 with the 60 grit Bora 7 while comparing to the equivalent in VSM XK733X and Deerfos PS992 60 and PS999 60.
I'm ordering more Bora next week. They cut as good and maybe smoother than the others but 2 belts and one type of annealed steel doesn't tell the story.
25 incoming in 60 grit. My belts are custom size but they charge the same(/sq in), which is great.

Here's a cool comparison chart for you guys. If your supplier is out of yours this might get you close
