Hi guys, I’m Hank Jiang from Shanghai, China and I’m a knife maker. With my resource in China and my knowing in knifemaking, I’m starting a business here on BF to sell knifemaking tools & supplies worldwide. Firstly I want to introduce the SJ-1 belt grinder to you.

The SJ-1 belt grinder is a compact, flexible and powerful belt grinder, it’s been popular among knifemaking society in China for years, known for stability and precision.

Build with strength

The main frame is EDM cut from solid steel sheet, all bolt construction ensures sustainability, accuracy and easy maintenance.

Small but powerful

The SJ-1 belt grinder is mounted with a 1.5hp (1.1Kw) motor, the speed of the belt can go as fast as 111 feet per second (34m/s), providing enough strength for aggressive grinding.

Flexible with multiple angle

Angle.jpg

The SJ-1 belt grinder found another way to offer different grinding appliance without changing attachments. With simple rotation, you can convert between flat grind, convex grind and hollow grind. This compositive design also prevents the grinder from using too many parts that may weaken its stability.

Adjustable work rest

The vertical work rest is mounted with lever and can be adjusted with another lever.

initpintu_副本1.jpg

The horizontal work rest is notched out for the wheels, can be mounted on the assistant contact wheel position and flat grind position.

Small wheel

The assistant contact wheel can be changed to alternative small wheels (0.79” and 1.18”), the angle of the belt here is lower than 33°, providing easy access to finger groove grinds.

Vertical & horizontal all in one

I'm in too I'll test one of your grinders and post results in shop talk here on BF and on another forum as well.

Edited to add that I will be attending a hammer-in on April 23 & 24. There will be several knifemakers there and I will be glad to have it available for a demonstration and hands on testing by all interested makers. I'll be sure that everyone who tries the grinder makes a post about the performance of the grinder. I think this will allow for a lot of exposure in a short amount of time.

I wish I had the real knife making chops to feel like I would be a worthy person to receive a grinder, but I just haven't been able to make as many knives since I started the woods.

Shoot a message to Salem. His website has a rundown of grinders that I know many people including myself used when we were looking for out first grinder.

Best of luck to you in this. The grinder market is still relatively small given the massive range of makers, styles and budgets.

Thanks guys for your support, Darrin Sanders emailed me first and I think I'll ship this grinder to him. Sorry Greenberg Woods and others, I really appreciate your provenance.

Hank, I believe you made a good choice on who gets your first grinder on BF's. Darrin will give you honest feedback and by able to get in used by a bunch of makers. Have fun !

Hank,
Looks like a versatile machine, Why did you make it with a 2 x 48" belt? The bests that are the best buy per square inch here in the USA are the 2 x 72" belts and they run a little cooler as well, Just curious why you went with the 2" X 72" unless that's a miss print?

Hi Rhino, it's not a miss print. The grinder was originally designed for Chinese market as a compact one. I understand that 2*72 would be more accepted in US and I'm thinking of developing this version, but first I'd like to see how you guys would like to say about the present one after you have some experience with it, as you know, I'm only starting this business.

OK,
2 x 48" will work but most makers that invest that much want the full variety of ceramic & and other belts that are available in 2 x 72.

I think the others on this thread will agree that a 2 x 72" is preferred on a professional knife grinder.

Darrin Sanders in a good man. I know from this and another forum and have spoken with him on the phone. I'm interested in hearing what he has to say about your machine.

Thanks for all the votes of confidence. From what I can see, 48" belts may be the only drawback to this grinder. I don't think it would be too hard for the manufacturer to increase the necessary dimension to allow it to accept 72" belts.

Go to Tru Grit and they have belts for it.
