New Benchmade 111H2O: A big ol' pile of fail.

I knew from the beginning of this thread the fanboys would be bashing Benchmade.

Is it possible to loosen the pivot to the point where the blade can be flicked open without any blade play?

I don't know about this particular model, but in my experience with several different axis lock models (806, 710, 730, 530), it is indeed possible to do so.

Yup. The blade has a lot of weight up front and can be flicked open very easily with just a slight loosening of the pivot screw. No blade play has been noted.

and I knew the apologists would be QQing.

it's funny, by far the most negative post in the thread is from the guy that actually bought the knife. I would have thought that would give him room to talk, but I guess he's just a fanboy too?

Why is the handle yellow? I think it is a nice color and all, but is there some connection between corrosion resistance and this color or is it just marketing?

Maybe Benchmade is following in the footsteps of Trijicon, and it's scripture related (John 2:14, "In the temple courts he found men selling cattle, sheep and doves, and others sitting at tables exchanging money.")?

Do you really think that Benchmade is sending out knives with hand written numbers that reference Bible scripture?

I want to think that you are joking but there is nothing that leads me to believe you are just a confused look?

And what is QQing?

I still don't see somethings as being an issue. Such as the thumb stud and the amount of handle relief. If the thumb stud was black it would still be a smooth piece of (black) metal. I have no problem accessing the thumb stud and I have never read another complaint about the handle relief on the Rift. I have on the 710 but not this model. But it doesn't matter if you push the thumb stud up instead of out. If the handle was so thick you couldn't see the thumb stud stick above it and the stud was touching the handle I could still open so fast that most would think it was an auto.

I will have to order one and see what I get.

I have fixed H2O(and i like it),and from start i was hoping that they will make this folder(sooner or later i will get one),i don't think idea is failed,
im sorry that execution on yor knife have some flaws ,but, why don't you return it to Benchmade?

I think you got a lemon. It even happens to the best companies with the highest QC. Send it in.

I was indeed joking. I'm surprised that you weren't able to detect that, absent a particular smilie. I'm quite certain, if Benchmade did decide to put marks on their knives referencing Bible passages, they wouldn't use a Sharpie to make what looks like a hand-written indication of a date of purchase on the handles of their knives.;)

And what is QQing?

Quandary Questioning?
Quirky Quacking?

Fun game!:D

I'm not bashing BM.

I used to be a huge fan of theirs. At one time I had over ten of their knives. However, that was when they were offering exciting new designs and the craftsman ship was still excellent.
Heck, even the blades came sharp.

I still have 3 BM's, some of the good ones, and I'll probably never let them go.

For several years now they have let me down and I no longer even consider their knives anymore. The 755 is the only folder in years that I've had any interest in at all. I won't be buying it though.

And no, I'm not a Spyderco or Kershaw fan either.

It's for water use, so if you drop it in the water it's easily seen.

Yellow does not seem like the number one choice for that. Orange seems like a better choice.

Is yellow for water use universal or just a good choice that coincidentally gets choosen by multiple producers for knives.

I am just going to have to disagree while Orange is a good choice. I find Yellow a brighter color and there fore sticks out better while under water. I have been a diver for 7 years and the majority of my equipment is yellow. I once dropped my light while doing a wreck dive and was able to retrieve it because it stuck out like a sore thumb on the sea floor. I hope that benchmade will continue to work the kinks out on this model, I myself have been thinking about picking one up..

You are supposed to be able to see the color yellow to the deepest depths while other colors start to take on a gray look. It is used for a reason.

On the surface converting a great knife like the 950 into a water knife seems like a good idea but it seems that BM failed in the execution.

I hope that in the future they address some of these issues (assuming that the OP simply didn’t get a lemon) but in the mean time the best option continues to be the Spyderco Salt knives.

I can respect that. I love the concept that practically every day I learn something new (or come to a realization that there is so much that I do not know). I also love the idea that a know-nothing like myself can ask these questions and get civil (and quick) quick answers....not every forum (or forum member) is like that you know;)

Thanks for the insight.

Yeah, FlatMtnBkr is right, orange would be bad for water use, because red is the very first color to fade at depth, and orange is heavily influenced by red. It goes away after less than 50' if I remember correctly. Yellow is much much more visible as you get into deeper water.

There does seem to be an association with color to purpose though. It seems orange is for rescue/assist knives, yellow for water/dive knives, and red handles for trainers. It seems to be consistent between Spyderco and Benchmade at least, from my experience.
