New benchmade 535 not sharp 😒

Back in 2012/2013 , most of the BM’s I got came dull. Very dull. I had already been familiar with sharpening so it was not a big deal. Then the more I thought about it , the more I became annoyed. A knife should come out out of the factory with a decently sharp blade. Especially at BM prices. So I chose to stop buying Benchmades for a while. If other companies can provide a razor edge then why can’t BM? Years later , I bought one and the edge was better. Despite what people had said, I never had any real QC issues, just dull blades. The BM’s I got in the last couple years have been pretty sharp. Much better than 10 years ago from my experience.

I have never been disappointed in the Benchmade knives I have bought over the years. Factory edges are hit and miss. Have always put my own edge on any knife I have purchased. Will admit that one of the sharpest knives I have purchased was an Ontario Rat2. That thing would slice and dice right out of the box. Makes you wonder if off shore folks can do it why not some of the domestic brands. That inexpensive Rat2 had great F&F.

I've bought ~10 Benchmades over 20 years. Every one was sharp outa da box.

Out of the 30 or so knives,12 of which are Benchmade, I bought over the last 5 years the dullest was a 0450cf. Oh wait, that was a ZT and not a Benchmade, my mistake. However a short time on the stones and it's sharp now, no big deal.

Insulting or Rude behavior
I've seen enough threads like this. Between QC issues and their political donations (which we can't get into here due to forum rules), I'm all set on Benchmade.
The irony of this coming from the guy constantly defending companies that produce clones and counterfeits. What a joke.

And to the OP, yeah it sucks to get a new knife that isn't sharp. I've had it happen with just about every company. Most disappointing was a ZT 0560 back when I first got in to more expensive knives. Look at it this way: if you use the knife, you are going to have to sharpen it eventually but if you don't use the knife, it doesn't matter if it is sharp at all!

Well, got my first new benchmade today and a little surprised at the sharpness out of the box. I mean, it’s not bad, but all my bucks I bought and 3 custom knives from Etsy were very sharp out of the box. Oh well, I was just expecting more for the price I paid.. I bought the spyderco sharpener so give it a try I guess🤨not that used to sharpening so see what happens! seems like a great knife otherwise. Nice looking blade and handle.
I have a 940 with a recurve 🤣, and had a mini crooked river come without omega springs. Benchmade in my opinion genuinely has no quality control anymore they just pump knives out without checking

Benchmade is where? West coast right? So your knife was made on a Monday morning, employee was hungover or high or on a Friday when all the employee thought about was getting drunk or high all day. Buy Benchmades only on Tuesday thru Thursday. 😁

I've found that lately Benchmade has been sending out rather aggressive toothy edges, far toothier and less slicy than most enthusiasts prefer, but more than workable for most people. They definitely sharpen on a lower grit belt than many other companies do. In the end, the only people who probably complain about it are enthusiasts like us, but we also have higher expectations for sharpness. Most of us also have the means, ability, and willingness to sharpen them to our satisfaction.

All of the (several) Benchmades I've purchased recently have come very sharp, and only needed a quick stropping to reach scary sharp levels. Some of the folks complaining that a production knife arriving that can't shave electrons off atoms right ouf of the box, must mean the company and the knives suck, are cracking me up. All of them have been flawless in every other way.

THANK you. Beat me to it. What a laugh.

The only time I sent in a Benchmade for service (broken Omega spring), they sent it back with a workable edge. Nothing special.

On the other hand, my friend dropped one of his knives and broke the tip. He sent it in to Benchmade for service last month and they ground it a little shorter to restore the tip. The problem was that they didn't sharpen the edge AT ALL. It was very dull when he sent it in and it was in the same condition when they sent it back. He was very disappointed that they didn't even bother to put any kind of edge on it.

The Benchmade knives I've had and handled new all had pretty much the same edge. Not the way I want it, but just fine out of the box. Thier grind seems just right to easily get the edge I like with a little work. Use whatever stone you like and lay the angle back a little while convexing, then finish off with the faintest microbevel. Perfect!

The two Adamas knives I've purchased in the last 5 or 6 months were plenty sharp. I stropped them on a piece of loaded scrap leather and they pop hair.

I would say they may he a touch toothier than my super polished blades, but for a knife made from tool steel and designed to cut more aggressive stuff, I think it makes sense.

Just got a Shootout in with a very good edge. I might strop it up a bit because I haven't had the chance to mess with Cruwear yet and I'm curious, but I also wouldn't mind at all throwing it in my pocket, carrying and using it as is.

Hey, thanks, rub my face in it, why don'tcha?

But seriously, congrats, :D and I am absolutely picking one of those up (probably at BLADE). An OTF in Cruwear? What's not to love? And I will echo what Steely_Gunz Steely_Gunz said, because that experience mirrors mine. I bet if you run that Shootout on a strop, it's going to really wake up. All my Adamas' have. Benchmade's Cruwear is exceptional.

I’ve bought several new Benchmades in the last two weeks and all have been very sharp.

3x Anonimus 539GY
1x Bugout 535-3
1x Station knife from the custom shop
1x Infidel 3300BK
1x Adamas 275GY-1

I’ve seen some complaints about some QC, but I’ve had higher end customs that weren’t perfect out of the box. Recently sent back a NIB Sebenza 31 for blade play and misalignment.

The only issue I’ve ever had with a Benchmade is my Autocrat which stopped locking out about 50% of the time and I just had a dealer send in for me. I’ve heard good things about their CS so if you have one that’s not up to your liking I’d either just send it in or ask to exchange with your dealer, either should be a non issue.

I'm still firmly in the honeymoon period, so take what I say with a grain of salt, but I absolutely love mine. It feels like a practical, well designed EDC knife that happens to be an OTF and I mean that in the best possible way.

The Duck showed me a quick video of his, and I liked everything I saw, so I believe I'll be in the same boat.
