New benchmade 535 not sharp 😒

All of the (several) Benchmades I've purchased recently have come very sharp, and only needed a quick stropping to reach scary sharp levels. Some of the folks complaining that a production knife arriving that can't shave electrons off atoms right ouf of the box, must mean the company and the knives suck, are cracking me up. All of them have been flawless in every other way.

Yup. Every knife I've ever bought from them could slice paper out of the box, which is the standard that all production companies sharpen to. I remember seeing a Benchmade shop tour video, they have phone books at the sharpening stations. The people sharpen a knife and test it on a page of the phone book, sharpen another knife and flip to the next page to test it. It makes it hard to believe all these stories about dull Benchmades from the factory. I suspect user error.

It reminds me of a guy who lost his mind in the ProTech Facebook group about receiving a dull group exclusive knife purchased directly from ProTech. They had him send it in at their expense, then posted a video of Dave, the owner, cutting open the box, opening the knife and shaving arm hair off with the "dull" knife. Some people just can't be pleased.

If a knife comes dull, deal with it. No problem there.

However, BM does promise in their paperwork associated with each knife that it will come very sharp, so if they genuinely do ship a knife with a crappy edge, that’s annoying.

You don’t have to deliver a good edge, but you do if you promise one…

That being said, user error is clearly possible. I’ve had at least one knife that I thought wasn’t very sharp at first test, and come back to find that it slices paper just fine.

The irony of this coming from the guy constantly defending companies that produce clones and counterfeits. What a joke.

This is false. I do NOT support counterfeiting. I'm also not a fan of copying. Maybe if you weren't too busy in W&C, you'd have seen my recent posts in the Honey Badger thread. Of course, it really doesn't matter to you or other members of the torch mob. I'm permanently on your naughty list for arguing against the rabid, frothy-mouthed firebombing of threads that mention Ganzo or Sanrenmu.

If you'd like to talk about more serious threats to this hobby or our rights, I'd invite you to join me in the political forum.

I stand by what I said 100%. Your post history is visible to all.

You're a lying clone defender and not one person should listen to a thing you say.

Good day sir.

And looky here where you say every time ganzo gets bashed on this forum, you'll buy a clone!

You're a lying counterfeit supporter. Go away.

1. Ganzo is not a counterfeiter. There is a difference between copying and counterfeiting. Ganzo also makes plenty of knives with original designs and probably does OEM work for an unknown number of other companies. I know words don't mean much in 2022 (more on this in the political forum) but there is a difference. Using these words wrongly in order to attack somebody is intellectually dishonest.

2. I have not lied. However, I have made the mistake of continuing to argue with self-righteous clowns like Craytab in various sections of this forum.

3. For anyone who is too busy to read the linked post or any of the others in which I've argued with these zealots, I got sick and tired of arguing with them. I only started arguing with them because of their insatiable need to troll threads where anyone mentions comapanies like Ganzo or Sanrenmu, regardless of whether the design in question is original or not. Their personal attacks against those who do not share their hard-line postion, such as wrongly calling me a "lying counterfeit supporter" here, are part of the problem. Comparing them to a torch mob, I offered to purchase a Ganzo product for every thread they torched as a disincentive to their misguided activist trolling.

I have issued one warning. I could have issued multiple warnings, but refrained.
I will issue more warnings if there is any further nonsense after I unlock the thread.

Once proficient at sharpening, many won’t even bother to use a knife out of the box. Just put your own edge on it right away.

I fall into that camp.
I still feel that a new knife should come sharp. But it's not the end of the world if it does not. I certainly own a passel of Queen knives in D2, and they never, ever came sharp. Didn't stop me from buying more.

Yup, I earned that one and will 100% own it.

Anyway, back on topic, I've had a lot of knives through my hands, including lots of Benchmades. I will say that benchmade has been one of the most trouble free brands I've owned. Like I said before, if you don't use that knife it won't matter if it is sharp or not. If you use it, you'll have to sharpen it eventually. So put an edge on and put it to use!

Benchmade makes excellent knives. When my Shootout arrives, I'll have to do an updated family post myself. Great pics, thank you for sharing.

A very sharp knife for one person could be a very dull knife for another. Everyone's standard of sharpness could be very different. Without any reference point, we do not know exactly how dull the OP's benchmade is.

In my experience, although Benchmade factory edges are not among the sharpest, they are mostly not bad either. Spyderco and Cold Steel are usually sharper. ZT is a mixed bag and so is Hinderer.
