New Blade Sharpness? - CAK

OK... I just ordered some 1"x30" belts from Lee Valley for my Harbor Freight:

Those ought to serve you well. With that variety of belts, Im thinking you'll be able to run the gamut from a little shaping/reprofiling to mirror polished edge.

In my own experience, I find myself going through the lower grits most frequently, and I buy the belts in the appropriate proportions. These days though, I might save myself the shipping costs and get some conventional sanding belts at the local hrdware store for really corse grinding. Unless of course I'm doing a large order from LV.

I just wasn't expecting to spend almost an hour's time, and use up two belts to get it "working blade" sharp, which IMO is no reflection from the edge and being able to cut standing xerox paper (not newsprint, and no shaving) cleanly.

I'm not sure whether you just got an especially dull one, or we HI owners are just overly accustomed to touching up and customizing our latest HI's.

A CAK/FFBM comparison would be neat. I've heard some good things about the latter, even if they're out of my own price range. :(

Help!
What am I doing wrong....

So far with the 8 Blades we have from HI.... all of them have come up SHARP with ceramic rods...and not very much work.

It could be that I am just lucky or... maybe I just don't know what Sharp is.....
(Tis true that in my Medical Career before my accident that I only worked in Radiology...Not surgery!!)
:)

The meaning of "sharp" is one of the great philosophical questions of mankind.... but a dangerous one.

Try looking up the definition of "sharp" in reference to knife blades.... and you will go insane!

(P.S. I'm in radiology as well)

My sentiments: Love the appeal, hand-forged attention to detail, history and user backing of this brand... I'm mystified why the kamis would final polish the blade *after* finishing the edge, thereby making it more dull. This is my first Khuk. I guess I had hoped that QC process would have alerted somebody that a knife doesn't leave the production facility until it passes an endurance test - and is sharp. Nothing personal against Yangdu or her product. Just being honest. It is a tool - and a piece of art. It must be functional.

I have lost track of how many HI blades I have, but over 30 and maybe less then 50...but I have yet to get a blade that I would consider truely dull. Some have been sharper then other, but they all work well at chopping and sliceing. Some have been touched up to be sharper but all have been able to cut paper, sure they are not razor out of the box (normally) but I have found them to be sharp enough.
