New blade?

I recently broke a Spyderco blade*. Didn't bother contacting them first, just mailed my $180 paperweight to Golden (from the other side of the world) with a note explaining what happened.

Got an email back, they had examined it and determined it was my own fault, no defects in the blade. I accept that. They also said the blade could not be replaced, which I expected to be the case. C'est la vie.

But they also said they would send me another Spyderco of my choice, to the same value of the broken one, which I did not expect. I didn't get a replacement blade, I am getting a replacement knife.

Seems to me that Spyderco looks at any returns on a case by case basis, and deals with each in a fair minded way, to say the very least.

*Be careful with Maxamet folks, it's quite brittle.

Oh really? That's even much better than replacing the blade for a fee.:thumbsup:

I imagine even more than S110V.

Most disappointing part was that the remaining stub didn't have enough mass to Spydie flick anymore.

OH SNAP! ....I'm buying a S110V knife today. I'm glad you posted this pic I will be careful with mine.

With the OP's knife is there any reason you couldn't hammer it back flat? Or is the metal so work hardened that it would break off?

OP just suggestion but what about a Spyderco rescue for your next work knife? there's no tip to bend https://www.spyderco.com/catalog/details/C45BK/Rescue-79-mm-trade-Lightweight-Black/13

Or Byrd makes a really cost effective version for only $22! https://www.bladehq.com/item--Byrd-Cara-Cara-Rescue-2-Lockback--68587

Pretty sure the blade isn't bent, just damage at the contact points where it shorted out the electrical, but I read it that way the first time, too.
lol Yes, your right I totally misread it.

If it's just that one little spot in the blade I would just pick up a cheap set of sharpeners similar to these.

OP, sounds like the knife has given you years of faithful service so it'd try to at least salvage it. Might not look as pretty as before but it's a interesting conversation piece. I would only look at replacing it if after I tried to de-burr/sharpen it, and found it effected cutting by getting hung up or caught on things.

Dougo83, I've used knives that were much worse than that one. I'd do the same as you are and just keep using it. :) As long as they are locking up safely they will still cut and get the job done.

Well...my knife will be coming back from CO tomorrow. I'm curious to see what they did to it.

Can you post pictures? Come to think of it why didn't you show us what you did to start with?

I wish spyderco would replace blades like benchmade does :( I screwed up two really nice ones. But I see why they don't, they have tons of models all in various steels. The only one I think they should replace is the gayle bradley if you use it for sports.

Hi Legs,

With so any models and so many constant quality improvements, it would be a major task. Companies that do replace blades use the same unchanged models for much longer periods of time than we do.

Well...I can't get the pic to upload. I'll probably see about just upgrading in the near future. Anyway, lady on the phone persuaded me not to re-grind and just have it re-serrated. They did a decent fix on the tip, of course it lost a little metal, and the burned up serration was enlarged to look somewhat "normal." I haven't had occasion to cut with it yet, but it looks good so far. Pretty impressed with the return on a jacked up blade.
