Well, it was a knife-free Christmas for me, but I did get a gift card to EMS. I picked up a couple of small things and then on impulse I bought a Buck Hartsook. Actually, it was labled as a Buck "Smidgen," but it was a Hartsook without the black coating and a better sheath for less than $20.

I doubt that I would have bought it if it weren't for the gift card, but it is a sharp little bugger and I thought it would be a useful spare knife to stash somewhere.

Who else has one? what do you do with it?

I plan on getting one to tuck inside my shoe for when I go places that aren't knife friendly. I just feel naked if I don't have at least one on me.

It seems like a cool little blade to have around. I was thinking about getting one to leave in my tackle box since it doesn't take up much room.

In your shoe? That doesn't sound very comfortable or convenient to draw.

No, but it's not really meant to be. I just feel out of place without a knife on me. It's more of a comfort thing. :D

While the shape is the same, they are different models.
The Hartsook is S30V with a black oxide coating, while the Smidgen is 420HC and a plain satin finish.

i think the Hartsook and/or Smidgen are great little pack/PSK knives... they also look like they would strap onto a stick, for a spear, easily...

Great little knife for a survival lanyard/necklace. It is like a little tooth or claw and great for quick cutting chores. Do keep the little loop on the handle-- it really helps the grip by putting your little finger in it.

I have a hartsook but never use it, I never thought of putting it in my boot, maybe a firesteel in the other one.

The smidgens in 420hc and not s30v

I bought one this year and epoxyed the sheath to the sling on my M6 scout rifle. It's a nice set-up. Not a huge knife, but sharp and functional in an emergency. It's small size and slim profile alow it to not extend beyond the width of the sling.

I've had one that a friend gave me two years ago, and I've been a fan of the little bugger. So d--m handy!

It's been used as an unfolding pen knife, opening mail, cutting the odd piece of twine here and there, cutting open those plastic blister packages, gut and clean pan fish, cut bait, and anything else you'd use a small pocket knife for.

The last few months I've been having a problem with my left hand, and it's hard to open a conventional pocket knife, so the Hartsook and another small pocket fixed blade have seen overtime.

A friend of mine who lost his right arm from the elbow down wears one as a neck knife.

I love my Hartsook!

Brent gave me one a while back. They are really nice. Its my 4 year olds knife now. Well, it stays in my drawer, but when were at the creek or in the woods its around his neck, along with a Vic Classic. Startin em young round here!!

Okay, so the main difference between the Hartsook and Smidgen is the steel. It's a neat little knife, but can't decide what to do with it; psk knife, edc, stash in car, piggyback on a larger knife? I'll play around with it awhile and decide what to do. Usually when I get a knife I have a specific idea of what I want it for, but ths was pure impulse buying.

I dunno about the self-defense properties. I would use my fists before the Hartsook. Then again, you could whip it out and run like Hell when they start laughing and piss themselves.

I have been carrying one everyday for awhile, and it is very handy. It really is as handy as a bigger knife and much easier to carry.

I'm not a huge fan of my Hartsook. As far as a small knife goes, I'd rather carry my SAK or something like an Izula, which is a much more useful size knife for me. Mine is stashed in my backpack and rarely gets used for anything.

Umm...dude, who ever said anything about defensive properties? This is W&SS, not Practical Tactical. :jerkit:

I'm not a mall ninja. I'm just so accustomed to having a blade on me that I feel weird without one. Besides, if there was ever an emergency I'd have an invaluable tool on me, even if it's limited in its capabilities. Survival situations happen in urban environments too. ;)

I have a Hartsook an wear it as a neck knife 24/7 using a kydex sheath, A friend lost his in the original sheath. The Smidgon sounds neat if the sheath retains the blade well.

Yep... My Smidgen has been in my pocket ever since I got it.
