New car / automobile buying & leasing tips for CPK'ers

There are scum and vultures out there. A guy who works with me bought a new car last year. Him and his wife were in a serious accident about 2 weeks ago and the car is likely a total loss. Yesterday and today he started getting persistent texts and phone messages saying they just need some info to finish processing his claim. He called his insurance and they weren't the ones calling. Preying on an injured couple...

Bought a car last week and need to bring it in for a recall. Talked to the dealer that I'm bringing it to (not where I bought it), and asked about the CDK thing. They are on it, and they said it's causing issues, but luckily they can still get parts, so hopefully all goes well.

Great insights, especially about avoiding the monthly payment trap and focusing on the out-the-door price. That tip has saved me a lot of stress in past negotiations. I’d also add that researching specific makes and models ahead of time is key, especially if you’re buying something with a unique market, like certain imports. For example, I once considered getting a BMW after hearing they can be surprisingly cheaper in the U.S. due to import tariffs and market demand differences. It’s fascinating how pricing can vary so much, this breakdown helped clarify why. If you’re thinking about cross-border options, keep in mind the shipping process can take a while, especially with all the required documentation and logistics: https://www.a1autotransport.com/why-is-bmw-cheaper-in-the-us/.

F'ing hate dealerships. Bought my last car from Carmax and loved it. If you can find what you're looking for at the closest location, or within a reasonable distance, I would recommend checking it out. The further away the car is, the more they charge to ship it. I'm in MA and the shipping charges ran from like $150 to $2000 depending on distance. The car I bought was shipped from VA and was $250 I think. And get this, they let me pay for the car with a personal check! Just had to show proof that the money was in the account. Did I pay more? Not really sure, as there weren't any cars at local dealerships to check out. But even if I did, it was worth it to avoid the hassle and stress.

The AC clutch/pulley is making a rattling noise on this POS ‘13 Forester, just started doing it yesterday. This could quite possibly be the worst car in the world.

I want to kill it.

SONOFABITCH! My lovely wife messages me the other night that as she was turning onto our road she noticed “a very strong smell, like burning rubber and peanut butter” coming from the cursed Forester. As soon as I started it up the next morning and popped the hood I knew right where to look, the AC pulley was shooting sparks out of the center, bearing went bye bye!

The good news in this is that the part I purchased 2 years ago was still available and for the same price too.

I still want to kill the car.

Best news to start this year, my wife finally decided to buy a new vehicle after finding out the Forester needed rear brakes and ball joints, plus a wheel bearing. This POS has been an absolute maintenance nightmare, good riddance! I put it out by the road for $2k, didn’t take long to have a guy interested in it for his TRIPLETS who turn 16 in a few months.

New vehicle for her is a 2025 Honda HRV and I like it, she shopped around and made a good choice, the heated seats will cook your ass off and yes that was a main selling point for her haha.

My silver 2011 Tundra was getting tired, well actually it’s just rusting out and falling apart, having issues every month so it was time. I bought it brand new on 2/1/2011 and put 211,113 miles on it. Just traded it for this 2021 garage kept old man’s truck with only 44k on it. Hopefully I can push this one past 200k with out issue also!

Those Tundras with naturally aspirated 5.7 V8s are just the best of the best, specially in years 2018-2021 which was the last year of that generation. Additionally I'd give you extra brownie points for choosing the extended cab version with 6 1/2 foot bed over the crew cab with 5.5. 200K is nothing for that power train with proper maintenance but in your geographic area, yeah, ice and road salt is usually the killer of these trucks.

Congrats Jacob 👌

Lemme guess… not a brodozer, but a dildozer? 😂

After letting me have a peek at the "joy stick" which Yoko had installed, I'll personally pass because it is not for me, but I won't judge those whose tastes are more exotic than mine. I'm just an aging and boring boomer with jold fashioned proclivities 🤣
